Argyllshire / Angus McEachern
« on: Saturday 12 June 10 11:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi Carolyn, the 1861 census record reads as follows:

Civil Parish: Oa; Address: Ballychatrigin.
Angus McEachern: Head; b.abt.1791 Kilchoman; Occupation Blacksmith.
Ann McEachern: Wife; b.abt.1793 Kilchoman.
Ann McEachern: Daughter; b.abt.1845 Kilchoman; Occupation Domestic Servant.
Angus McEachern: Grandson; b.abt.1854 Dumbarton.
Peter McEachern: Grandson; b.abt.1856 Dumbarton.
Margaret Galbrath: Granddaughter; b.abt.1848 Glasgow.
Source Citation:  Parish: Oa; ED: 1; Page:  5; Line: 13; Roll  CSSCT1861_72; Year: 1861.

Apologies, I mis-read Angus's place of birth earlier; he was born in Kilchoman. I can't find any sign of Ann in the 1871 census so the death that Neil Mac found is probably correct.

Hi Carolyn, thanks for joining in. I've been away for a few days so have just picked up your post.
Looking through my tree information, I can't see anything obvious that would link any of the Archibald McLeans in my tree to your 3xG.Grandfather. The only McEachern I have in my tree appears in 1887, coincidentally marrying a nephew of my Archibald McLean (b.1811) on his wife's side. However, this is too late to be relevant to your 3xG.Grandfather. As Neil Mac has said below, the link maybe further back in time with Archie's parents awaiting our discovery at some future date. I'm sorry I can't be of more help.
Kind regards
Stewart

Thanks Gadget, I'll check that death.

Regarding Islayboys's query, I have nothing on Annie's father John, but I have found two of her siblings, Flora and Charles.

Stewart

Hi Gadget, I have now had time to process the information you and others so kindly found for me and I've made excellent progress. ;D Documental evidence indicates that the family were using both the surnames of McLean and McLergan between the 1800s and 1850s but had standardised on McLean or MacLean by the 1860s.

I have come across another mystery that I wonder if you could help me with. I can trace Archibald's father, Alexander, through the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census records but can't find him in the 1871 census or in the death records. He was born about 1787 in Kilchoman parish and like his sons Archibald and John, was a tailor in Port Charlotte. If the information on his children's death certificates is correct then he was alive at the time of the death of his daughter Mary Brown (m.s. McLean) in May 1873 but deceased at the time of the death of his daughter Margaret McLean (m.s. McLean) in Jan 1879.

His first wife Margaret died before 1841 and his second wife Mary McLean (m.s. Brown) whom he married in 1842 died in Port Charlotte in 1862. However, I just can't find any trace of Alexander thereafter :(

Kind regards
Stewart

Hi Islayboy, the information on Mary Brown's (m.s. Sinclair) death certificate reads as follows:

Mary Brown, Widow, (female) died on March 29th 1856, 2.00 a.m. at Port Charlotte, Kilchoman, aged 92 years. Father: John Sinclair, Farmer (deceased). Mother: Mary Sinclair m.s. Clarke (deceased). Cause of death: Decay of Age. Burial: Kilchoman Churchyard. Charles Brown (son) informed.

I haven't been able to find out anything about Mary's parents but I have quite a bit of information on her decendents. Mary was one of my 4th Great Grandmothers.

Hope that the above information is useful to you.

Dear SIMW and Kingskerswell, many thanks for your replies which are much appreciated. I'll attempt to follow up the possibility of baptism records at the 1st Ballymena, Presbyterian church.

I'm not sure about the marriage of James Ahara to Margaret Curry. It may be another relative but as far as I know, my James Ahara's first marriage (he had three wives) took place in Greenock in 1878. I have a similar post on the Renfrewshire site which you view at the address below if you require any further information.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,406152.0.html

Contributers to the Renfrewshire post have identified two probable brothers for James: Hugh b.abt 1859 and Joseph b.abt 1861.

Kind regards

Hi Jonn, I think you could be right! It would be easy to mis-transcribe O'Hare instead of O'Hara.

James's details are correct, Sarah's birthplace is incorrect but that could be another transcription error, and they would only have had one child at the time of the 1881 census, daughter Margaret born 1879 in Greenock, so these details are also correct!

The presence of James's two brothers is the significant new piece of information.

Many thanks Jonn, very much appreciated!  ;D

Dear Lora, many apologies for mis-reading the posts and crediting Dave!  :-[

I vaguely remember my father taking me to the cemetery to visit the grave when I was about 2 or 3 as we lived in Simshill at the time. I've written to Rhuallan House so hopefully they will be able to provide the lair reference.

Apologies once again
Stewart
