The church of St Catwg stands in the heart of the village of Cadoxton, and was known under the old parish of Cadoxton-juxta-Neath, so this is Cadoxton church.

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / Re: Marriage Neath
« on: Tuesday 09 February 10 15:49 GMT (UK)  »
I think I have good news for you, on both the marriage and birth enquiries you recently posted!   I have a copy of the marriage certificate of Daniel Davies and Mary Evans, married 20th October 1877.

Daniel Davies  19 years Batchelor Coalminer Cwmpandy Nr Neath Father: Samuel Davies deceased
Mary Evans 20 years      Spinster                   Mount Pleasant Neath  Father: David Evans

I tried to scan the cert for you, but haven't yet found how to do this!   Also you asked about Daniel and his birth records at LLangynwyd, Maesteg.   I'm not surprised you couldn't find this as it caused me many sleepless nights - he was actually born in Carmarthen.   Because he was recorded on 1871, 1881, 1901 census as born in Maesteg, it was only when I discovered his stepfather was from Maesteg that the whole family was listed as being born there, but in fact his mother and family were from Carmarthen.

There is much more info on the family if you would like it so please let me know.
Regards,
Chris

I visit St Catwg's regularly, as most of my family is buried there, I'll look out for your gravestone.   The burial registers for 1900 onwards are kept in the church, and you can arrange a visit to check these by contacting the vicarage in Cadoxton, if the burials you want to check are before this, they are at both Neath Archives, and West Glam Archives.

Last summer there were volunteers transcribing the inscriptions on the gravestones to put onto a website, but they did say it would be some time before it's available - I would think there'll be a great deal of demand for this!

Hope this helps,
Christine

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Precious photograph in need of repair
« on: Monday 08 February 10 15:15 GMT (UK)  »
If there is anyone who could help me restore the attached photograph I'd be very grateful.   It is a little bit beyond my capabilties.  It is a very precious picture of my husband aged 11, which my ninety year old mother-in-law rediscovered, and would love to have on display, but it's in a bit of a state!

Many thanks for any help,

Christine

Cardiganshire / Re: Occupation Flintsman?
« on: Wednesday 07 November 07 16:39 GMT (UK)  »
After help from a very nice lady at Carmarthen Registry Office, i've had the welcome news that my John Davis is in fact not a Flintsman, but a Huntsman!!
Because this was a written copy, not a copy of the original, a mistake had been made.   Great news, I can concentrate on this new info, instead of trawling the internet looking for information! :)

Carmarthenshire / Flintsman? No, a Huntsman!!
« on: Wednesday 07 November 07 16:35 GMT (UK)  »
Thought I'd provide an update on my search for John Davis, Flintsman, on a wedding certificate for 1845.  I'd spent ages trying to find any possible info on Flintsmen, and thought it might be worth querying with Carmarthen Registrars if there could be a mistake, as this was a written copy not a copy of original cert.   Thanks to a very helpful lady, lo and behold John is a Huntsman!

Something to get my teeth into at last, and could well tie up nicely with John being an ex-East India Company employee as suggested by Osprey.

Regards
Chris :)

Cardiganshire / Occupation Flintsman?
« on: Tuesday 30 October 07 15:28 GMT (UK)  »
I have received a copy of marriage cert  dated 1845 which gives Groom's father's occupation as "Flintsman", at this time the father John Davis was living in Cynwyl Elfed, probably born in LLechryd around 1791.   There is a John Davis indicated on 1851 census as East India Company pensioner,  so I am hoping to find some link to connect "Flintsman" with this.   Any suggestions or help gratefully received, I've exhausted all other lines of enquiry!  Do they quarry flint anywhere in Cardigan/Carmarthen?   It doesn't seem to have any connection to the Army, so I'm really struggling.

Thanks
Chris
