Technical Help / Re: Family Tree Maker not connecting to the internet.
« on: Sunday 17 March 19 10:12 GMT (UK)  »
I had completed as much of my research as I needed so have been away for some time. In the meantime FTM 2014 seems to have been discarded by the new owners.  This is news to me but not a surprise. I read that Ancestry had 'sold' out another company and  being a cynic I concluded that nothing good would come of it. My experience was that Ancestry - or its staff - took a keen interest in the program.

Up to now I've not been affected but having received a clue which could take my research into another branch of the family its very disappointing to find that we are being 'forced' to succumb to the new company's profiteering. Yep, they need to make money but at 80 I'm not in a position to afford such nonsense. The result of this is that despite being a keen genealogist I will not be using FTM except as reference and definitely not buying into the FTM 2017 (which is obviously out of date already as it is now 2019) ;-)

PS; anyone know of a decent tree maker?

The Common Room / Re: Marriage banns and ?
« on: Saturday 30 January 16 16:06 GMT (UK)  »
My word Stan, that was quick and of course now I know, the word on the register is obviously licence.

That would account for the delay in the date of the licence and the actual marriage.

Many thanks.

The Common Room / Marriage banns and ?
« on: Saturday 30 January 16 16:00 GMT (UK)  »
In a parish register from 1741 most entries show banns by publication. However, some entries are shown as the marriage is by what looks like 'lyreure'.

Can someone please identify this word please?

Cheshire / Re: 'Latinized' names

Thank you everyone.  Your posts also explain why other documents from the same period use what seems to be modern English.

Cheshire / 'Latinized' names
« on: Thursday 24 December 15 10:07 GMT (UK)  »
I have been looking at various Cheshire Parish records, mostly from Acton, Nantwich, from around 1670 up to around 1710. It is fascinating to see one in particular where so many first and surnames are spelt as if they are in Latin. For example, on one page from 1699, Gilbert is shown as Gilberti and Joseph as Josephi. It also uses, filia and filius to describe daughter and son. There are other examples including surnames.
My question is whether someone could please explain whether it shows a Catholic influence and how much the Catholic church still influenced life at the time after the dissolution over a hundred years earlier.
I'm not sure if copyright would allow me to attach an example of a page from a register but if that is OK I have one in particular showing what I am talking about. Sadly, I have not retained the detail of where the record came from but I suspect I could track it down if necessary.

World War One / Re: LITTLE William George - Completed
« on: Thursday 30 May 13 10:36 BST (UK)  »
Hello Sue,

Many thanks for your interest. The Winifred you refer to is in fact my mother who was a Brittle, as was William's second wife Eleanor (Nell) and another sister Marion.. They are the three girls in the photo.

We have another branch of the Little's in our family - my maternal great grandmother - but I have not gone down that route yet.

Perhaps if later I come across a possible connection I might give you a shout that would be very helpful.

In the meantime, thanks for contacting me. It does beg the question, is there any connection between the Little's you have and mine?

Regards

Mike

Malky, thank you so much for all your hard work with this subject, its been fascinating. We visited my stepdaughter this week and introduced her to the family tree - so far - and told her about the additional saga of Horatio and Crombie Cottage. As a newcomer to the subject she was also fascinated about how much its possible to find out about such things, especially with expertise such as yours.

As I love maps, thank you for ths link which puts a face on the area. Without your input we would not have known so much and I will now be able to include this story in the family history.

I hope you got something out of the exercise as well and can appreciate its tremendous value to us.

And also thanks to Red Mystic for the original question about the Cottage which has led to all this.

Yours,

Mike

PS; We are still looking for Harry Donald  ;D

RM, while surfing looking for more connections to the cottage I came across an excellent website dedicated to the Hunter family.

I'll try to find it again and post the link.
