World War Two / Re: Pathfinder Squadron

I don't know if this is the place to post this but I'm trying to trace someone who was in the Pathfinders.

I'm trying to trace my father's cousin Jack Hall, who was in the Pathfinders.

Unfortunately I have very little information about him.

His name is Jack Hall and was born in 1921, I believe he was a Flight Lieutenant.

I believe he may have been a navigator but my father is certain that he flew in a Mosquito. My understanding is that at some point he was asked to fly as navigator in bombers who constantly failed to finish missions, how true that is I do not know.  After the war he became a Customs Officer, we think in Ramsgate.

I have no idea about service number or where he was stationed.

I tried the Pathfinder museum but they couldn't help, they sent me an application for Service Records but I just do not have the information to be able to fill them in.

Many thanks

Andy

Just found this while searching around Some Selected Reports from The Windsor and Eton Express 1842

The parish of Great Marlow has had no guardian in the Wycombe Union since Lady-day last until now. On Friday an election took place, every precaution being previously taken by the proper authorities to prevent every species of undue influence, bribery, and even canvassing. The state of the poll will therefore show how triumphantly Liberal principles would prevail there, if uninfluenced by power, and unawed by menace, intimidation , and bribery. Mr.W.Francis nominated Mr.Charles Susan, who had 267 votes; Mr. William Wright, 207; Mr.John Moss, 191. Mr.Robert Maddocks, the vicar's churchwarden, nominated Mr.Thomas Bell Gibbons, who had 140 votes; Mr.Thomas Rolls, jun., 120; and Mr.James Bird Brooks, 16. Mr.Maddocks contrived to get himself nominated by the parish clerk, but in another persons name; this was discovered, and the candidate being unqualified in other respects, was not allowed to stand the poll. The first three gentlemen were honourably elected; and their attention to the duties of their office in inspecting the state of the workhouse, &c., already shows how well qualified by their energy and discretion they are likely to prove for the duties of the office.

Just thought of one other important issue with the Gibbons family and searching the records.

I had the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies do a little bit of research for me and it became apparent that there seems to be two Gibbons families, one came from the Marlow-Wycombe area and the other family from the Hughenden-Naphill-Princes Risborough areas.

To add to this confusion both families were fond of using the same names, Thomas, William, Robert etc.

As far as I'm aware they are to separate families, there could have been a common ancestor at some point but I don't know when.

So it's important to check their places of birth.

Hi,

I couldn't help but join in the chat about the Gibbons family.

My grandmother was Mary Ann Gibbons (1886 - 1965), and I'm in contact with a few other Gibbons family members in Halifax UK.

I've been chatting on and off over the last few months with Dale, we share a common GGGreat granfather and she sent me this link.

Part of the reason for my jumping in like this is that Orpheus mentioned the Gibbons marrying into the WETHERED brewing family.

Well it seems this might have happened earlier than 1807, here's an exert from bucksfhs.org.uk:-

1744 George Wethered m. Elizabeth Gibbons
George Wethered, son of Edward & Susannah Wethered of Penn (V.C.H.)
1745 Birth of George son of George & Elizabeth Wethered
1757 Death of Elizabeth wife of George Wethered
1758 George Wethered m. Anne Reynolds
1761 Birth of Thomas son of George & Anne Wethered

It seems an Elizabeth Gibbons married into the Wethered family as early as 1744 and they had a son.

This thread has been very interesting and has helped me with a few missing dates keep up the good work!  ;D

Does anyone have any pictures of the Gibbons family?

I have one picture which I believe shows some members of the Gibbons family, my mother claims to remember one of the people in the picture but all the others are a mystery. The picture looks to have been taken pre World War 1, about 1912 ish.

Cheers

Andy
