The Common Room / Re: Question re entry on birth certificate
« on: Sunday 19 February 12 11:30 GMT (UK)  »
The marriage to Mary Ann Martin is interesting, the year fits if not the first name. I suppose she might also have Kate as another forename and chose to use it later, this needs further investigation.
There is no sign of the children Thomas John and Ernest, but 1911 states 10 children, five of whom were dead, so that could be the explanation.

I will keep in mind that Kate was telling porkies, but I have more possibilities to look at, so thanks to everyone.

Rootschat comes up trumps again.

The Common Room / Question re entry on birth certificate
« on: Sunday 19 February 12 08:13 GMT (UK)  »
The birth, in 1890, was registered by the mother, who gives details as;
Name of father John Wilkins
Name of mother Kate Wilkins formerly Martin.

I have been totally unable to find a marriage for Wilkins/Martin, so I was wondering if people gave false details, like pretending to be married when they were not.
I have no reason to suspect it could have been overseas. In 1911 John claims to have been married 41 years. His occupations have been milkman and brewers drayman.

Any thoughts would be most welcome please.

The Common Room / Re: Marriage certificate error?

Dawn, that is amazing. How do you have access at this time?
I expected a wait of several days if indeed anyone could help.

That sounds very logical, that the clerk has got it wrong. I wonder how often that happened. ::)

At least now I can stop worrying about Richard's missing first marriage.

Thank you so very much.

That would be amazingly kind.

The date was 2 January 1843 at the parish church of St Mary Lambeth.

Groom was Richard Hux, widower of full age, son of William Hux.
Bride was Sarah Clewly, widow of full age, daughter of Richard Clewly.

If anyone is in a position to check, I would be most grateful.

The marriage took place in St Mary Lambeth. It won't be possible for me to go and look at the original.

I'm really surprised that someone would not look at their own cert., but then I've never had one to look at  ::)

The Common Room / Marriage certificate error?
« on: Monday 02 January 12 11:25 GMT (UK)  »
I have a copy of a marr certificate of 1843 where both bride and groom are described as widowed.
I have been unable to find a previous marriage for the groom, born 1820, apparently single in 1841 census. The banns issued in Dec 1842 have them as bachelor and spinster.

The groom signed, so could presumably read, so I wonder why they wouldn't have queried the error of their status (if it is)

I would be grateful for any opinions.

Just had a quick look and found one of my 'names'
Richons Revell son of Wicoli.

Wicoli is clearly Nicoli (Nicholas)

Do the transcribers not have any training in eg Latin versions of names?
If I was transcribing and saw what looked like Wicoli, I would have a second look and use a bit of commonsense. I do understand the importance of not making assumptions, but better to put Nicoli and allow a searcher to see that and think 'Ah that could be Wicoli', rather than the reverse.
