Essex Lookup Requests / Re: cressal family
« on: Monday 23 August 21 19:46 BST (UK)  »
I haven't reasearched anybody in Essex as most of my family come from Suffolk, Sussex and Hampshire. From the limited information I have regarding the Cressal/Cresswell/Crussel family - William Laflin and Susan(nah) married in Halstead, but I don't know why and if Susan(nah) comes from that area -  what would be the next best step to take? Are there any good websites ?

Suffolk / Re: Brett and Garnham
« on: Wednesday 11 August 21 20:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I've recently got back into my ancestry and started from scratch as my offline tree got corrupted.
I've been going back on some of my old posts and chats and have come back to the BRETT family in Earl Stonham.
I thought that the BRETT family interwove into my family twice, but it looks as though it was more than that.
When i've looked back at my data I'm confused about an ancestor of mine: Susan BRETT.
Susan married Edward YOUNG in 1837 in Ipswich where she lists Philip BRETT as her father on her marriage certificate.
On the 1851 and 1861 census her birth place is listed as Stonham.
I can find a baptism for her in Earl Stonham in 1817 daughter of Philip and Ann BRETT
This is where I get confused.
I cannot locate a marriage between a Philip BRETT and Ann.
A Phillip BRETT later marries Susan WILLIAMS in 1819 and they go on to have more children, however I can also not locate a death for Ann BRETT between 1817 and 1819
Is it possible that Ann is mis-transcribed?
Several ancestry hints list Susan BRETT as Susan Gowing BRETT, but I do not know where this information comes from - is it a possible maiden name for Ann?
Any help would be gratefully received as I have no idea how I can unravel this further

David - Thank you so much for the information and the links. I didn't know about being able to access the wills so I am incredibly grateful. I have also requested a copy of the gravestone photo

Thank you

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Re: Sheppard & Oxborrow
« on: Thursday 10 June 21 15:04 BST (UK)  »
I've recently come back to my ancestry research after moving from abroad and having to start again after my offline tree was corrupted.
I've been looking back at the Sheppard and Oxborrow family just recently and what I thought was straight forward has be chasing in circles.
It's now James Oxborrow who is proving elusive.
I originally thought that he was baptised in 1783 in Helmingham, but now I'm not sure
There are two potential burial dates for him - 1840 in Helmingham age 53 and 1847 in Tannington age 70
If it is Helmingham, then this would fit with the 1783 baptism, but all children bar one were born in Fressingfield.
If it's Tannington, there is a potential 1841 census listed with James and Sarah and a daughter Martha. But this would put his baptism way earlier at ~ 1771
In addition there appears a non-parochial baptism in 1781 in Rendham with his birth place listed as Farnham.
Any ideas how to narrow it down?

My records show that Sarah Sheppard was baptised 25/11/783 in Fressingfield. She is the daughter of John Shepheard and Elizabeth Whitmore.
The siblings for Sarah I have listed are: John (born 1775), Elizabeth (born 1779) and Mary Ann (born 1781). All born in Fressingfield

Suffolk / Brett and Garnham
« on: Sunday 21 August 16 18:38 BST (UK)  »
I have come to a brickwall with a marriage on my family tree and would appreciate any help with this. I have a Phillip Brett born in 1767 in Earl Stonham who appears linked twice on my family tree. His mother and father are listed as Thomas Brett and Mary Garnham, but I am unsure how to research them further. I believe Mary Garnham maybe the daughter of Thomas and Jane from an ancestry hint, but I have no idea if this is correct or where they were married.

Any ideas how I can track these two families back further?

Sussex Lookup Requests / Re: Jacob Knowles
« on: Tuesday 29 March 16 19:03 BST (UK)  »
I checked familysearch and saw the baptism - but when I check against the Cowfold parish records on CD it states that it is James Knowles so Mary Greenville (baseborn) with a note that Jacob Knowles is the reputed father.
I have no access to the original records to clarify this, as all other baptisms for Cowfold before and after this date list the children as son/daughter of Jacob and Mary.
Do you think the first Mary died after the last child (Henry 1731) and he possibly then remarried another Mary after James/Jacob was born?

Sussex Lookup Requests / Jacob Knowles
« on: Monday 28 March 16 19:55 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor Richard Knowles was baptised in 1773 in Clapham - the son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Betty) nee Hazlegrove.
Jacob and Elizabeth were married in Patching in 1761 and I believe Elizabeth was baptised there in 1739
As for Jacob... the only potential baptism i can locate for him is in Cowfold. There is a James Knowles listed as being baptised in 1732 baseborn to Mary Greenville. However there are other children listed before and after this date as children of Jacob and Mary Knowles.
I would love to find out if this is my Jacob, but I can't locate a marriage for Jacob and Mary to substantiate any of this
Any help would be really appreciated

Library and FHS Lookups / Silletts in Stonham Aspall, Suffolk
« on: Monday 12 August 13 10:39 BST (UK)  »
I have a William Sillett born ~ 1783 who married a Deborah Lockwood and later Amy Ward. The census information from 1841-1861 lists him as living in Whitton,Ipswich Suffolk with the 1861 census listing his birthplace as Stonham.
From the baptisms the only William Sillett I can locate baptised around the correct time was listed as the son of William Baptised in Stonham Aspall Suffolk 06/07/1783.
Unfortunately it does not list his mother.
All other children baptised around the same time are listed as the children of William and Jemima Sillett.
Could Jemima also be his mother?
Is it worth pursuing the baptism records or would it still list him as only the son of William?

Any help would really be appreciated
