Hi N Farrow,  yes I think it is the only way we are going to get anywhere with this family, if at all...
I am always keen to meet family :)

Hi N Farrow, great to see your post.  I am also descended from this mystery man. William Owen Kitchener Dent.  A few other descendants and I have been trying to unravel the mystery. It is difficult as there don't seem to be any registrations in the early South Australian days and what ones we have found give very little information. I dont know if there are more detailed records written. For example, on the official marriage record on Ancestry it says my ancestor's father was WOK but on the copy I received in the mail, there were no parents named.
I have tried to get in touch with bgor and Diane Cummings who compiled the passenger lists that are on record. There are a lot of things we need to confirm yet.
If you would like to contact me by email I would be happy to keep you updated with what we find..

Yes it seems that way.  I am in contact with a descendant of William the son, the death certificate doesn't mention a middle name.  It would be good if we could contact Diane Cummings and see where it came from on the ships list for the John. For that matter where she got all the names for the cabin passengers.

There was a Joseph Beasley and family on the same ship. He is believed to be her brother. I haven't looked further into that yet.

Yes that is how it appears according to the information I have been given, and the family details tie in with our family

Along with other descendants of the Dent family I have been trying to untangle the facts from the misunderstandings for this family.
There doesn't seem to be a Nathaniel at all. The only Sarah Jane is the daughter of Henry and Jane Dent buried at West Terrace Cemetery. There is no other Sarah Jane buried around that time. The cemetery office checked.
The only passenger lists for the John seem to be compiled by Dianne Cummings. Barry Leadbeater checked for me and found no original list. He did find a newpaper piece saying that a Mr Dent was a cabin passenger on the John. He found a booking record for a William Dent, wife, 4 sons and a daughter which matches our family.  They arrived on the Orleana on 10th June 1840. This seems to be the more likely arrival.

Along with some other Dent descendants we are trying to untangle the truth from the misunderstandings with this tree.
So far we have not found any evidence of Nathaniel. The only place he was named was on a ships list compiled by Diane Cummings. We believe it to be an error or the second name of William the son.
A booking record which seems the more correct one is for a William and wife, 3 sons and 1 daughter who came out on the Orleana arriving 10th June 1840
The Sara Jane mentioned seems to be incorrect too.  She was the daughter of Henry and Jane Dent and is the one buried in West Terrace Cemetery.

Not on the Sloan side, but found out a lot about Mary Ann. They had been looking for her for about 20 years. All her brothers went to the USA and all the sisters stayed in Northumberland.
They knew she had come to Australia, but didn't know any more except that she went back home once and was supposed to stay 6 weeks but only stayed one because of the cold.

lol Yes, after posting my message last night I did check it out then realised who you were.
I dont have any more information and havent heard from Pauline for a long time. I am in contact with a "cousin" on the Piercy side though. Her great grandmother was Mary Ann (who married Robert Sloan) her younger sister.
