Cheshire / Re: the oakes family from cheshire-any ROSE or PARROT in your tree?
« on: Thursday 06 November 14 14:10 GMT (UK)  »
Allen,

It isn't clear from your post whether your surname is Oakes but I thought I'd get in touch with you anyway.

Several of us who have tested with FTDNA and found near-identical Oakes dna in our paternal line, motivating us to get active in the Oakes surname project at FTDNA.   That project has more than one haplotype represented, suggesting more than one family line but those of us who are most closely matched are trying to trace back to a common ancestor.  We'd be very interested in learning more of your family line and anything you'd like to offer us in the way of your DNA information.  Maybe we can help you research also!

By the way, a 12-marker match is essentially worthless -- going to 67 markers is definitely a good decision if you want to pursue this stuff further.   The 12 markers should have provided a haplotype prediction though -- what is yours?

Here's a link to Ann Fullerton Gove - you can take it from there, presuming you are a subscriber:

Posting this with out going back through the entire thread so it may be unnecessary . . . but just in case you aren't aware of it.

Ancestry.com has at least one family tree for this line, "owned" by a Julia Gove,  It shows 13 children of Andrew Gove and Mary Ann Strachan.  She also does not have any reference to the 1841 census although she has the others.

Angus (Forfarshire) / Fullertons around Dun Parish
« on: Thursday 17 November 11 01:58 GMT (UK)  »
For nearly 40 years I've been trying to find the origin of my 4g-grandfather as have many distant cousins, none with success and a few with undocumented speculation.  Here is the substance:

The marriage of George Fullerton and Margaret Pirie was recorded in the OPRs for both Dun and Dunnichen parishes in 1739.  George is recorded as the tenant at Mains of Dun on the birth of his first child in 1740 and begat a large family before relocating to Benholm, Kincardine, about 1759.   No one has been able to find the origin of either George or Margaret.

A memorial in Benholm, erected by a son about 1802, states that George was born 1707 and Margaret 1714.  The only George I've located born in that year was in Lunan Parish but nothing else associates him with George of Dun.

Dun Parish also had a James Fullerton living in Glenskinno, just north of the House of Dun.  There were also Fullertons living at Kinnaber, a few miles east near the mouth of the River North Esk.  Some have speculated that George was from one of these families but no documentation has been found.

Margaret is equally difficult to locate - the Pirie surname is uncommon in Angus (much more common towards Aberdeen) and shows up only occasionally.

Any thoughts - or to be really optimistic - solid information on the origin of George and Margaret (Pirie) Fullerton would be very much appreciated.   Thanks!

I don't know if there is any connection with the "fullerton" in Anne Gove's name but I see that the 1841 census shows an Anne Hampton age 30 living in Fetteresso with Hugh Fullerton and his family.

Thanks.  If you run into the Fullerton connection, please post it here.  I just did a quick check on McBeys and Hamptons using Familysearch.org to see if any familiar names popped up and while there are a few possibilities, none particularly jumped up and grabbed me.

BTW, you say you have the marriage of Jean/Jane Hampton and John McBey in Johnshaven.  It was  also recorded in St. Cyrus on 16 Sep 1838 according to familysearch.org.

Regretfully, Colin, I have only little data on him.  But "familiar" I only meant that I was aware of him and his location and have him on my "maybe related but needs further attention" list.   There were a fair number of Fullertons in that general area, including the Quaker family that owned the Kinnaber estate north of Montrose.

I do have information on Jean(Jane) BMDS Etc. According to the death cert. of Elizabeth b/d 1855 there were 4 girls born to John/Jean.I have the following: Ann b.1839,d.1895. Margaret Fullerton b.1845,d.1855.  . . .

<snip>

Do you have any idea where that "Fullerton" slipped into the name for Margaret?  I had Fullerton family in that area but I haven't found either McBay or Hampton among the connected surnames.
