Hi

Just to make sure I was not having a 'senior moment' I checked on Google.

The book is called A Pedigree of the County Families of Yorkshire. Author is Joseph Foster.  The Fairfaxes are in volume 1. It was published in 1874  :-\.

Good luck with your search

Not sure if this is any help to you, but,  years ago I was doing some research on Sir Thomas Fairfax - General during the English Civil War (1640s)

When I was in the reference library in York they had a book called, I think,  The Pedigree of Yorkshire Families. It consisted of loads of family trees of all the notable families, the Fairfaxes included.

I didn't take much notice of it at the time as my research was not genealogical (unlike now :)) I just remembered all these amazing fold out family trees.

Well I think I may have put a small spanner in the works for  anyone in the future looking at the 2011 census here in Ireland.

I, feeling very smug, and claiming to be the resident family expert insisted that I filled it in.

One of my sons was christened Michael and his birth cert, passport etc confirm this. However, he is known by everyone by a different name (long story - also my fault  ::) )  One guess which name I put on the Census.

I think I might have got my Mums birthdate wrong as well.

OH is doing the next one  ;D

A really not smug anymore Icicle

My best three are Artaxerxes, Keturah and Cubit.

First two are biblical and the third I think is originally a surname - still working on that one  :)

Here is another drunk father story

A friend of mine is one of 15 children. When his youngest sister was about to arrive his Dad drove his Mum to the hospital and then went to the pub.

The delivery took longer than expected and he was well oiled by the time he got the call from the hospital.

The nurse showed him his new daughter and asked what he was calling her (in Ireland births are registered in the hospital). 'Kathleen, after my Mother' he said and went to see his wife. When he told her she was furious. Their eldest daughter was called Kathleen  ;D

This is an interesting thread :)

Myself, my Mum and my Granny were christened Marie-Therese, Marie-Helene and Marie-Louise (complete with hyphens  ;D) and yet none of us are called by anything remotely resembling our names.

One of my sons is James. This was before I started researching and discovered that we have added to a long long line of James' on both sides of the family.

Thanks Redroger

Wow, I didn't realise that there were that few Scuffhams around.

It was James William that moved to Yorkshire sometime between 1890 and 1894. He was a licensed cab driver. His wife Sarah and at least one of her brothers came as well. JW and Sarah had at least 7 children. One of them, James Edward is my OH greatgrandfather. He had 12 children.

OHs Granny knew that her grandfather came from Lincolnshire but didn't know where exactly. A quick check on the IGI shows Scuffhams (and variants) around Fishtoft/Boston well back into the 1700s.

Do you know where I would find the parish records? It looks like I'm going to be busy   :)

Hi Redroger

I wonder if they are related to my guys?

This is a new branch of the family for me. I'm pretty sure that all the Yorkshire Scuffhams are related to each other but I don't know how unusual a name it is in Lincolnshire.

I've already run into a mystery with John and Ann/Mary.

I found a marriage on 14 May 1834 in Holbeach between John Skufham and Ann Squires. In 1835 their eldest son is christened John Squires Scuffham. Followed by Ann, Sarah, Mary, Rebecca, Martha, James and James William. This ties in with the various children in the census.

In the 1851 and 61 Ann is shown as John's wife and her birthplace is given as Holbeach. So who is the mysterious Mary in the 1841 census?

Does it mean john had 3 wives: Ann, Mary and Ann or is there a mistake in the 1841 census? Anyone got any ideas?  ???

Many thanks for the info, it is much appreciated.

The James aged 5 in 1861 I'm sure is 'my' guy. I didn't know about the other one though.

So it looks like one John and 2 wives. Its a great start  -  I'm looking forward to digging around in a new area  ;D

Thanks again.
