Cork / Re: O'DONOVAN of C19th Clonakilty
« on: Saturday 27 October 18 23:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi  Fenian1956,

Sadly Keith, I am not getting ahead. I had hoped that by talking on rootschat others would come forward and share information.
From two contacts, both suddenly know nothing.  One contacted me with shared DNA, (not my DNA, this surname belongs to my in-laws) but as soon as I mentioned the surname O'Donovan being the common link, I heard no more.
The other, did not know who their grandparents were and did not want to talk about it.
Grrr!
An in-law suggested I must have made it up, as their family was never involved with any plots, battles or uprising! Do I make another brick wall in the family tree?

And to your question - Yes, New Zealand is a Rugby nation - we even dress our babies as All Blacks!
I live in Napier.

Lets hope this response gets replies - there must be other researchers keen to put this family tree together. The Donovan's of Clonakilty, Cork certainly had large families!

Fenian1956... thanks for the information.  I'll go search for his family tree.  I am looking for an Aunt (Miss Donovan), who will be an in-law on his family tree.  I need the link to my family....or is this just a bit of Irish myth - someone saw the surname a claimed her as a relative?
But I guess that would be a dangerous claim to make back then...  am I correct in this thought?

22Simon90....we have a link!
My family are via Sylvester, (and wife Nora Mary O'LEARY) through his daughter Maggie.
Your lineage is through a brother called Patrick (and wife Ellen Wren)

1901 Census
Residents of a house 15 in Coolowen (Whitechurch, Cork)
Show all information
Surname   Forename   Age   Sex   Relation to head     Religion
Donovan   Sylvester   55   Male   Head of Family     Roman Catholic
Donovan   Mary                   45    Female   Wife                     R Catholic
Donovan   Maggie                   20   Female   Daughter     R Catholic
Donovan   John                   19   Male   Son                     R Catholic
Donovan   Cornelius   18   Male   Son                     R Catholic
Donovan   Mary                   16   Female   Daughter     R Catholic
Donovan   Julia                   12   Female   Daughter     R Catholic
Donovan   Anne                     8   Female   Daughter     R Catholic

Donovan   James                     2   Male   Son                     R Catholic

From this census, three daughters and the son of Maggie, settled and are buried in Napier, New Zealand.  They are Mary (Molly), Julia (Sheila), Anne (Nance). Maggie died in July 1949, in Great Crosby, Liverpool, England. These three ladies (the old Aunts) lived together in their last years of life - attending church being their main occupations. I met them as old ladies.  Nance was the darling that all the small children adored.

There was family talk of one of more brothers also living in New Zealand or Australia.  Someone recalled one of them visiting Napier with his wife and children.
Can anyone add more?

Fenian1956... other family talk says that the family was linked to Michael Collins, via an Aunt.  Can you add anything to this idea? I have no idea how this connection would occur.

England / Re: Robert TYSER

Hello Hamburger,

Thanks you for the dates - it has pulled my records into shape.

As for Henry Tyser - I had his birth in 1805, in Barking Essex, and his baptism 6 May 1808, St George, Hanover Square, London. With his death in 1866.

Thanks for the correct birthdate - but who is this child called Henry Tyser born 1805, in Barking - poss. the missing baby to the first marriage?

I will try to send you a personal message

Thanks for the new information.

Interestingly all his three wivies have the name "Maria" - the Latin or Roman for "Mary".

Also noted Henry Tyser the alleged eldest child of the second wife is born in 1805.
More likely he belongs to the first wife Maria - there is not time for him to be conceived within the second marriage.
Dr Robert then remarries to give him a mother.

I wonder if you RootChatters are still following this...
I am searching for Mary DUES who married William KILGOUR in an unknown place. They came to New Zealand in 1842. Presume they married in Scotland.
Their eldest son is born in Irving, Aryshire about 1826.
The McBride location of Dunbarton, Greenock and Ireland on the census also match my family.
I wish we both knew the parents names of these DUES daughters?

Mary DUES is born between 1800 to 1804 in Scotland. She is known to be a tall lady who was very kind. I don't know how to get back any further.
Forty years ago I was told about two brothers coming to NZ - one stay and one went to Australia. However I've reheard that tale so many times, and thought it belonged with the Kilgours.
I'm really digging deep as I have the family history for 6 out of their seven children. Many thousands of descendants!
The missing person is the second daughter Martha Kilgour, born 27 May 1829,  in Dumbarton - she is known to be alive in 1881.

If your Martha DUES has a mother called Martha, then..... my fingers are crossed. please link! ;D

Wow..its is amazing. What amazing researchers you all are. Two uncommon surnames but I still had them confused.
If Frank Colledge is NOT BORN in New Zealand then he's not my relative - but this has been a great help for me as I can now unlink the pair of them and stop wondering.
many thanks KaeDee

I think I get it.... we have TWO Miss QUELCH's
Edna Kate QUELCH
Mona Edna May QUELCH
So no early marriage - two separate girls.

Thanks everyone... I can take Frank of my list as he is born in England.
That's great news
