Yes, Jean, it's father and son, both called James.  Father James born abt. 1809 and died aged 76.  Son James born 1850 & died Amoy.  Hope this is the correct explanation as it appears to be the one which my research indicates.

Thanks, Jean.  Noted that James Masson (b.1850) died in Amoy, China [and is buried there, according to my research] but is remembered on the family gravestone.

May be nothing but my wife's family includes John Christie MASSON  born Tullo, Benholm abt. 1846, worked in China but dies Scotland 1873. He is the only person in our tree to have Christie as a forename and I have not found out where it came from although the following may be a possibility.
Have a note that James MASSON, son of Alexander MASSON and Janet CHRISTIE, moved from Sketraw to Cowie about 1810 marrying a local girl Mary Watt [Aberdeen & NE Scotland FHS Journal 81: Nov 2001].
Unfortunately, James Masson seems to have been quite a common name - I have at least 3 of them in the tree.

We visited Benholm Kirk some 10 years ago and may have information of value to JeanP.  Please contact at (*).  My wife's grandfather Masson is buried in the kirkyard.
