Nottinghamshire / HANNIBAL / ANNIBAL or not puzzled
« on: Sunday 04 October 09 16:31 BST (UK)  »

mary anniball age 59. b. belper. occ. seamstress. head.(wid)
william anniball age 34. b. basford. occ. labourer. son(mar)
sarah anniball age 31. b. nottingham. occ. lace runner. daughter.(mar)
emma anniball age 14. b. nottingham. occ. cotton factory girl. daughter
william anniball age 10. b. ditto. son
elizabeth anniball age 8. b. ditto. daughter.
mary.a.anniball age 2. b. ditto. daughter.
living at;tyler street,st.marys,nottingham
this is what the image says but i would think the children are the children of william and sarah and sarah is the daughter in law rather than the daughter.

i was given this very kindly by a rootschatter and its thrown up a puzzle for me .

listed is  Emma Annibal/Hannibal  aged 14 on the 1861 census as you can see with her parents, 10 years later 1871 the parents (surname now spelt AUNIBAL)have a grandchild living with them called
Ellen Thompson aged 2 so going on this i assumed her mother must be Emma but she is not present.

now i can find the marriage on bmd for a Charles Thompson and Emma in nottingham, but the Emma's surname is Ramsdale.they are a couple on the 1871 and  on the 1881 i find Charles and Emma Thompson with their Ellen all living together. so i am assuming i have the right family.

hope you can follow me on this bit.

Emma's parents listed as William and Sarah (annibal, hannibal or aunible) are listed on the 1851 as married but i can only find one marriage  for a William Hannibal and a Sarah ramsdale in 1855. i can find no birth for Emma under any of the four surnames  nor can i find her with them on the 1851 census.

am i missing something here, please need some fresh eyes to give this the once over! i am working on Emma been born before they were married yet they have a child called Robert with them on the 1851 !

help please

Nottinghamshire / french children to a notts lace maker ?
« on: Tuesday 08 September 09 23:08 BST (UK)  »
I am rather puzzled as to my Wealthall family suddenly having 2 French children in between census.

I have a thomas Wealthall and wife Sarah who have children in nottingham then suddenly on the 1881 census they have two French children (listed as theirs on the 1881 &1891 census)  Eva Wealthall 1877 and Ernest Wealthall 1879.(British subjects)

Does any body have any thing similar around that time, that a group of  Nottingham Lace makers went to Calais France for ? years  to work, then returned.
if it was just the man going i could understand  but the wife too ! and possibly the other children ??

Was there some fantastic piece of lace that needed to be made or were they showing the French their skill and trade ?

I can trace Ernest wealthall (1879) up to 1911. on the 1901 census it says married yet cant find a marriage for him or a wife. In 1911 he is on to 2nd wife (married 1908) living in Devon mouth.

Eva wealthall  can see a marriage for her in 1893 (am sending for marriage cert)
but with either man listed on same (bmd's) nothing !

why are this family so difficult ?
any help or enlightenment most welcome .
