Northamptonshire / Marriage Licences
« on: Thursday 03 January 19 17:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I have a copy of a marriage register entry in Potterspury for Richard Watkin(s) and Catherine Atterbury in 1771 and it states that they were married by licence. I know that Ancestry have the Northants Parish registers but where can I find Northamptonshire Marriage Licences? Do they exist? Are there online records?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Common Room / Re: When is abroad not abroad....?
« on: Monday 17 October 16 20:25 BST (UK)  »
Thanks to everyone, as I suspected the general consensus seems to be that they were out of the country given the time stipulation on collecting the share of the estate.

They were not abroad in Australia.    The First Fleet departed in 1787 and arrived in Sydney in 1788.

1776
That's the year of the Declaration of Independence ..... USA etc http://www.historytoday.com/robert-hole/american-declaration-independence-july-4th-1776

When I saw the date of the will, 1776, it did make me think of the Revolutionary Wars period or maybe the East India Company.

Given the ambiguity I think I'll need to have a good think about where to go next, otherwise it could end up in my growing list of "brick wall" files  ::)

The Common Room / When is abroad not abroad....?

Hi,
I wasn't quite sure where to post this to begin so apologies if it is in the wrong place. It does concern a general query although the specific reference is a Cheshire related one so if the moderator moves it in due course please feel free :)

I recently found a will for John Furnivall of Astbury, Cheshire proved in 1776 via FindMyPast and it contains the following term;

"also I will that if Thomas or James Furnivall shall not come from a Broad (sic), Either one or Both to demand there partes (sic) of money within the space or term of twenty years after then thence from then there (sic) shares or share of Either one or Both to be equally devided (sic) amongst all the brothers and sisters then living or there heirs...."

Does "abroad" mean "beyond England abroad" or is it merely an 18th century concept of abroad i.e. out of one's own parish or county. Given that the will states twenty years as being the time allowed to claim the share of John's estate, I'm tending towards them being out of the country.

I've searched for death records for Thomas and James Furnivall after 1776 (the date of probate) in Cheshire but they seem to either have a different father or are outside the Astbury area which doesn't necessarily rule them out but doesn't confirm them either!

If Thomas or James did not return to collect their estate share, would the money be automatically divided between the other siblings or would there need to be an amendment or codicil recorded somewhere to say that the terms of the will had been fulfilled by the executors?

If it is they remained out of the country, could you suggest where to research next.

Thanks

Cheshire / Re: Cheshire Wills & Probate

You've hit the nail on the head with your phrase "that may, or may not be, my ancestors"......

Like you say it doesn't seem that expensive buying the odd will or certificate here and there but when things are uncertain then the costs can soon mount up buying things in the "hope" that you've picked the right one.....

Cheshire / Cheshire Wills & Probate

I've just discovered that FindMyPast have made available copies of Cheshire Wills and Probate records, including images.

I had already ordered copies from Chester Archives of some definite known ancestors wills, however I've made a discovery by looking at a will of the brother of my 4x grt grandmother Sarah Hulme. I had come to a bit of a brickwall in that I had two or three possibilities for her baptism each with different parents. As her brother's will mentions all his siblings and Sarah as well as her husband's name I was able to look for baptisms of her brother and Sarah and siblings with the same parents. After a long process of elimination over several hours I've found Sarah's parents at long last  :)

It just goes to show that "going round the houses" things which looked seemingly insolvable, are not really.

I'm currently looking into other brickwalls and see if the same trick will work with those!!!

Hello Brenda,
It was seeing your post that jogged my memory actually. I had left that line for a while and got side-tracked by another lead and then haven't returned. I shall dig out my file and look at it afresh  :)

All these ancestors demanding our attention, it's like that variety act of trying to keep so many plates spinning all at once.... ::)

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Re: Odd-Rode - SIMMS
« on: Saturday 28 May 11 21:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I've just found out that I am related to some of the Simms mentioned on this thread.
My 2x great grandmother is the Ann Simms on the 1841 Odd Rode census, parents Thomas and Sarah. I think that Thomas married Sarah Hancock in 1824 and that Thomas is the son of John and Sarah Simms from Sandbach b.c. 1801.
If anyone has more info on this branch of the Simms I would be interested in discovering more.
Thanks,
jubee

Thanks once again heywood for looking at this.

The Ann Stone in 1851 in Barton upon Irwell does look promising especially as her birthplace is Boylestone the same as Hannah Mould (nee Stone)  :)

I shall put all this new info in some kind of order and decide my next move !!
