Northumberland Lookup Requests / Re: North Shields non-conformists

Peter married Mary frost in 1808 at Christ Church- they lived in Bell Street in 1851 census- I think Peter born circa 1784 in North shields according to this return but as yet I have not found his baptism so suspect he might have been baptized in nc church too.
Thanks for the look up

As you probably know from 1754 until 1st July 1837 only Church of England, Jewish, and Quaker marriages were valid, so even if they were non-conformist they would have to be married in the Parish Church.

Stan

thanks for pointing that out.. I did once know that but it had gone in one ear and out the other..  ::) Does that apply to baptisms or were they valid in a non-conformist church only?
thanks for swift reply.

Northumberland Lookup Requests / North Shields non-conformists
« on: Tuesday 01 June 10 14:15 BST (UK)  »
wonder if anyone can help look up a family for me in North Shields..

I've found a marriage at Christ Church for Peter Christie and Mary Frost in 1808 but no baptisms for their children and I'm beginning to suspect that they were baptised at one of the non-conformist churches in the town.. I am particularly interested in an Isabella Christie baptised between 1813 and 1818 to the above parents though any children with the above parents gratefully received as I have had no luck so far in tracing any baptisms.
Any pointers or help would be much appreciated as I have hit a bit of an online brickwall and can't get back to North East till much later this year.
thanks ETHYL X

The terms of many apprenticeships forbade marriage, and most males and females under 21 had to forfeit their apprenticeships if they got married. Apprenticeships were for seven years, and usually began at ten to fifteen years of age.

thanks for that...still a few years adrift but it's my best guess so far.

can anyone tell me if apprentices were allowed to marry in the early 19th century while serving their apprenticeships? My ggg grandfather was born in 1830 and christened with his father's surname, Emmerson although he was born of a single woman Elizabeth Reed in North Shields.. she was baptised 1811 and George Emmerson senior was baptised in 1809.. I have found their marriage in 1834 in Wallsend when she was 23 and he was 25 so am at a lost as to why there was so long a delay between their first child and a marriage. George was a stone mason and I wonder if he was apprenticed and unable to marry, though this tradition may well have died out much earlier than this date?
Any thoughts welcome.

Hi

I suppose she could have married someone else before she married James Noble ???

I think she may well have done.. I have found a marraige in Durham for Sarah Ann Hardy to Richard Cooke in 1865.. may have to bite bullet and order the certificate to see father's name.. now just trying to see if he died in time..  :-\
