Australia / Re: What happened to Ivor HOPWOOD who died in Australia
« on: Sunday 16 November 25 17:30 GMT (UK)  »
The hospital visit mentioned wasn’t bad but what had happened after was quite bizarre and it was followed by a nasty phone call to me from a newly found family member resulting with the whole family being ordered to have no contact with me!!!
I am still baffled as to why they took this decision but accept that they are not going to be a part of my life. I have managed ok without them in it and realised that my life would not have been better had I been part of the family as I had always thought it would be.
My aim has always been to get the longed for photo of my father as an adult but have had to accept that this is hardly likely now.

I am in great debt to RootChat and to all who have helped me in my ‘on/off’ research about my father. I did not intend to offend those who have been of invaluable help to me and put up with my poor understanding of technology by stating in my response to Lozzalita that RootsChat was not the means of further contact. I got carried away seeing her message as my last contact with the family revealed a huge rift amongst them. Fortunately I was not part of it but I felt that I needed clarification of the family situation before committing any further contact with her on RootsChat.

I was amazed to find that my father had lived /worked in Brunei apparently around the 1954/55 years. What I did discover in my visit to New Zealand when I visited his grave was that he was probably an alcoholic.
Brunei is known as a very strict country and alcohol is forbidden there so I was puzzled as to how he had managed to stay there for at least a year. A colleague who worked there for the British Council said it was easy to get alcohol and hide it for those who worked for the British Council. He said no doubt that my father could have continued drinking there despite the threat of severe punishments(death????)
My colleague hasn’t been able to give me a contact in Brunei as it is some years since he left there.

Hi Lozzalita,
I assume that you are Cyril’s younger daughter.
I was always puzzled as to why your sister made no attempt for me to meet you once I hade met up with her.
I ceased contact with  her when I realised that I was feeding her with all the information that I had discovered about my father and his family but I was not getting much from her. What I especially want and still would like is a photo of my father as an adult. I have several of him now as a toddler and a few as a young teenager but not as an adult.
Incidentally, Annie Malpass , my grandmother, would have nothing to do with me even though I was her first grandchild. People have told me over the years that I look like her!! Not sure if you are wanting further contact but this forum is not the means for it.

The Common Room / Re: What Country is your research ?

Initially Australia but then New Zealand. I now need to know who to contact in Brunei about the time my father lived and worked there but I have failed abysmally to find any helpful contact there. The only one that answered was the British Consul giving me official information about their work but nothing to help me. I also researched Jersey, Channel Isle. Had great response from RootsChat member there as I did for Australia and New Zealand.. it was an Australian member who found where my father was buried after years of searching. A NZ member contacted me and picked us up from our hotel in Auckland and took us to his grave there. Likewise a Jersey member picked us up from our hotel and took us to local library where he found valuable information about my family. I continue to get messages regarding my father which spring surprises on me. Altogether a wonderful group who have helped a ‘dinosaur’ regarding computer usage.
There doesn’t appear to be anyone dealing with Brunei on RootsChat

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Barbara K Hopwood

I hopefully have removed my posting as it was seen to contravene the rules.
I have done all those steps you suggest and got nowhere so decided to post on Lancashire forum in the hope someone knew the family.
I guess I shall have to persuade my husband to book a few days in Preston and Manchester so that I can visit the libraries there. I have found librarians a valuable source for information both here and when we visited New Zealand. It was through posting on Roots Chat that I found out that my father was buried in NZ after over 10 years of futile searches.

Thanks for that. I had only contacted the Sydney Archives. Hopefully the National Archives can point me to who/where/if  records of personnel are kept
I have had problems over here in UK trying to get information about my father’s twin brother who worked in Hawker Siddley aircraft factory in Broughton, Flintshire, North Wales. This is now known as the Airbus factory and has gone through other owners over the years. No one there has any idea who retained personnel or other records from that period and I should imagine that could have happened in Australia as the Post Office there was split up. But 🤞🤞🤞
