The Common Room / Re: Richard Waller - paintings
« on: Wednesday 06 September 17 21:01 BST (UK)  »
I was very surprised to receive a notification out of the blue after such a long time since I posted about Richard. I am still piecing his life together and at some point I am hoping to write his life story (even with the gaps in his life)

I am very interested in the painting that you have, Are you able to tell me anything about it and I would be very interested in a picture of it to join the small collection of images that I have been able to get.

If you want to know more about Richard I can let you know about his life; although he did pack rather a lot into it.

Thanks everyone for your help. I have been trying to fine an old map to help with this but with no luck (some local knowledge probably helps).

Port Street in Holbeck existed in the 1880s but was demolished at some time? Does anyone know:

a) When it was demolished?
b) Where would it be or what would be there on a modern map?

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Re: Hampshire & Isle of Wight Directories
« on: Thursday 30 July 15 15:54 BST (UK)  »
I hadn't seen it but I have those names. I have actually completed the list today. 200 years of those running it 1815-2015.

I was unable to find all the directories I needed but using an old Isle of Wight newspaper (The Isle of Wight Observer) I was able to fill the gaps from the information I found between 1892 and 1900.

Using the electoral registers I was able to find the more recemt ones 2005 to date (and some assistance from a facebook group which I belong for some others before 2005).

I will passing this over to the current "manager" (can't call them landlords/ladies now I expect) and passing a copy to my local Record Office who have also helped me find the relevant information.

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Hampshire & Isle of Wight Directories

I am in the process of finding the names of those that ran the Hare and Hounds inn at Downend, Arreton on the Isle of Wight from 1815 to date

I have used censuses, parish records, licensing books, the local newspaper archive, electoral registers and Hampshire and Isle of Wight directories and have compiled a lsit of names from 1815 to 1891 but Iam trying to fill in the following gaps:

1876 - 1891 James Cousins ran it but I cannot find any record confirming if he ran it up until 1894.
In 1894 I have Henry Golding running it but cannot confirm if he only ran it for a year because in 1895 a James Butchers was running it; possibly until 1898 when Frank Newberry took over until 1899. From 1900 until late 1990s I am OK.

Arreton was split between North and South Arreton in 1894 with Downend and the Hare and Hounds coming under Whippingham. If anyone has any Hampshire/Isle of Wight directories for the years 1891-1893 and 1896-1897 it would be very helpful.

The card:

Was after 1932+ so it can't be a WW1 one. I have tried the WW1 records but with it being a Scottish record I can't look any further on Ancestry's info.

Europe / Polish Countess
« on: Friday 03 July 15 23:23 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to identify a Polish Countess but this is proving difficult because the only information I have is the name "Countess Koentaki". This name is given in a newspaper in 1878 (in the British Newspaper Archive). However, whoever wrote this quite likely either only heard the name or the information was passed to them and is quite likely an incorrect spelling.  :P

I have tried the following with no success so maybe someone with a better idea might come up with something.

Lancashire / Re: Studio - Market Street, Manchester 1830s
« on: Monday 04 May 15 20:49 BST (UK)  »
I have been researching Richard's life for over 10 years and have a copy of The History of Skipton. I have also found about 170 mentions of him (so far) in the newspaper archive and London Gazette. Richard does appear in the directories and on 2 occasions is listed as coach builder (because his apprenticeship was with one 1826-32.)

I am at the stage where I am trying to fill in a lot of gaps and the location of addresses where he spent his time is just one of these.

He was a busy man and I know I will never know everything about him but with so many clues I have to try and gather more information on what I uncover.

In 1882 a long obituary about Richard Waller's life was printed in the Leeds Mercury. Not everything in it is accurate but there is mention (only a few lines) of his in time Manchester. Until I uncover more on the period in his life Market Street, a few names of men that he knew whilst there and mention of him putting pictures in the Manchester Exhibition are the only pieces of information I have.

He finished an apprenticeship in 1832/3 and the same article states he moved to Manchester after the death of is uncle. He married in 1836 and had a child back in Skipton in Yorkshire in 1837 so must have returned before that. The article states he was in Manchester for 2 years.
