Kilkenny / Re: Bolton from Gowran-Thomastown??
« on: Thursday 17 May 12 20:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi Shanew. I think the townland you are looking for is KILFANE, about three miles from thomastown on the road to gowran. I remember my father talking about a man called Bob Bolton who lived about a mile up the road from where we lived  in the townland of either DYSART or PLEBERSTOWN  in the parish of Thomastown. Not too sure but i think a nephew of the man my Dad spoke about died about a month ago. Hope this is of some help

Thanks for the info guys, but I'm still no wiser about the need for the second backsight. Someone suggested it might have something to do with it being used as an anti-aircraft weapon.
ALANMACK.  You were spot on . Photo taken in the museum in the Curragh Camp. Indeed it is mounted on a beaverette with the roof cut off. Ex Irish army. Well spotted.

Can anybody give me any information about the the two backsights on this weapon. It is stamped with the makers name BRNO. Have fired this weapon many times, but have never seen sights like this before. Many thanks

Armed Forces / WW1 Medals
« on: Sunday 04 March 12 23:12 GMT (UK)  »
I recently found two WW1 medals while rummaging in an old box. Don't know where they came from, definitely not relatives of mine. Someone may know more about them
1 British War Medal in very poor condition. It has no suspension bar, disc only. Named to, 44592 gnr. j. lynch. r.a.
2 Victory Medal No Ribbon, named to. 21095 Cpl. W. E. Green,  L'pool. R.
Maybe some relative might be looking for them.                                                                   Regards, jakel

Thanks guys and gals for your help.   MMM45 the link you gave will not open.    CATH151 I dont have access to findmypast but the rest of your info was amazing. You said John Daly had at least three brothers, one of whom was called Patrick. After a little more digging we discovered that the said Patrick was married to my Aunt. We never knew he had a brother John. We feel really stupid that the evidence was in front of our eyes all the time. Amazing the way a small bit of info brings a much bigger picture to completion. Thank you so much.

Hi Neil1821. Boy, that was quick. We tought he was from Hugginstown, but that is only two miles down the road from Newmarket. Spot on. Any idea why the number is so short?  Any idea what the initials in the action taken section are. My friend has the three medals but none are named or numbered. Is this not unusual? Again many thanks for your fast and very helpful input.  Regards jakel
