Would you mind having a look in directories for the 'Kent Arms'
which is the pub named on the pottery and I believe Charles Hutson ran?

Thanks

'CRUTTE' is part of the name of the contents, it may be some sort of cider, I have a machine for crushing apples called a 'Scrutter' ... Just a theory. I have a document which implies that Charles Hutson was the landlord of the kent arms. Thanks for the link, the railway pub is about 300 yards from my house where I found the fragments.

Does anybody have any evidence that would place Charles Hutson as the landlord pre-1878?

Hello, I live in King's Cottages in Nettlestead, and I have just dug up from my garden some fragments of an earthenware beer flagon with the inscription -*CRUTTE* KENT ARMS * WATERINGBURY* Thete are bits missing and the begining and end are missing from the first word and 'wateringbury'  I have found a reference to the pub and believe it was run by Charles Hutson. Is this of any interest to you? Can you tell me where the pub was?

All the best

Chris
