The Common Room / Re: SS Beltoy picture request
« on: Saturday 27 September 14 16:29 BST (UK)  »
Hello

Nice to hear from you.  It was some time ago that I posted the request for a picture of the Beltoy but never managed to find one so I would like to take up your kind offer which will help to complete my dad's service history.

If you can send me a private message with your email address I can reply with mine.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

The Common Room / Donald Christopher O'Boyle
« on: Friday 06 January 12 22:10 GMT (UK)  »
I have a fragile copy of the Daily Sketch dated 1942 with an interesting article on Donald Christopher O'Boyle who would have been 18 in July 1942 and lived in North London but was Irish.
Donald tried to Join the RAF when he was 17 under the name of William Blake a friend who was 18, he went through training for 3 months before he was found out.
If any family would like a copy of the article let me know it has a photo of him too.

Hi Irishhistory

Sorry this reply is a bit belated to say the least but only just seen your post as been taking a break from family history so trying to get my head around it again.
Yes there is a definite connection as my Bates family are also in Stockport.  The story goes that the family walked from Carlisle to Stockport to find work and they can be found in Stockport in the 1891 census.
John b.1841 and family at Keen St, Portwood and Thomas b.1843 and his children Mary Ann b1877 Thomas b1878 at Hempshaw Lane which was about as close to the hatting factories as you could get.
Parents of John and Thomas were John Bates b1806/8 Ireland and Ann Gilchrist b1806/8 Ireland, with Alexander b1847 and Eleanor b1849 siblings, but that's about as far as I've got.

Happy hunting

Hi Emms

Thanks for the advice, I know this part is going to be a lot tougher.  Yes got most of the census info I can find.

Did a general search on Gilchrist and there seem to be a lot in Scotland, so wonder if they came over from Ireland or whether it was the other way at some point.

I'll keep digging and see what comes up.

Hi all

Just a few more clues for you.  I am tracing the line for Thomas Bates b.1843 Ireland who had brothers John, Alexander and sister Eleanor.  I sent for Alexander's birth cert and parents are listed as John Bates, Labourer and Ann Bates (nee Gilchrist) both born Ireland - Alexander was born 17.1.1847 at Old Whippery Lane, Rickergate.
Not sure now how to find the marriage or Thomas's birth in Ireland as no idea which part of the country they came from - any suggestions?

I also have marriage certificate for Thomas Bates to Mary Thompson 4.10.1873.  Thomas was a widower at this time so on a previous thread the name of Mary Henderson came up, so its likely this was Thomas's first wife.  Witnesses T. Hutton and Margaret McCollins (possibly Mary's sister?)
Mary and Thomas lived at Milbourne Street, Carlisle.
Mary Thompson's father was James Thompson (farmer) deceased at the time of the wedding.

Hi Irishhistory

I've not made much progress with finding where Thomas Bates was born apart from it was Ireland, but this is what I have so far:

Thomas Bates b.1845 Ireland married Mary Thompson b.1844 Gamblesby in 1873 at Carlisle
children were:
John J. b. 1874  Mary A. b.1877  Matthew b.1880
and
Thomas Bates b.1878 who married Beatrice Cotton b.3.11.1887 - living in Stockport, Cheshire
children were:
William  b.27.7.1911 married Elizabeth Ann Clarke
and Thomas who married Margaret Burgess

Hope you find a connection there

The Common Room / SS Beltoy picture request
« on: Monday 30 November 09 19:44 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me find a picture of SS Beltoy?
There are several web sites that mention it but no picture, the info I have on it is as follows.
Built by Ramage & Ferguson , Lieth Scotland in 1915 for Shamrock Shipping Co Ltd Belfast it had several name changes in
1946 to Min Jen, 1947 to Hai Nu and in 1949 to Aguadulce it was deleted from Lloyds register in 1956.

This is the last picture we need to complete a record of my father's WW2 service, although he was a gunner in the army most of his war sevice was aboard merchant ships.

There is a book called 'The Shamrock Shipping Company' which may have a picture but it appears to be out of print at the moment.

Any help much appreciated

Hi GrumyamI

Just wondering if you knew where any of the other male children of Elizabeth and Joseph went. My mum was told that Jacky Bowers, footballer for Derby County was a cousin but he was born in Scunthorpe?  I do know that the 3 girls all moved to Stockport.

If I hadn't found Rootschat I would still be at square one - its brilliant.

I have sent you a private message if you want to chat in more detail.
