Family History Beginners Board / Sadie Amsbury-Stoke Newington fire brigade - 1940s
« on: Thursday 26 August 10 21:27 BST (UK)  »
I'm wondering how/where to find info on fire brigade employees working somewhere around Stoke Newington during the mid 1940s? My mother (Sadie Amsbury) was living in this area at that time. I believe she was a singer in a fire brigade band & sang at the London Palladium!! She seems to have been relocated (evacuated?) to Colwyn Bay, where she met my father Cyril Hopwood & they married in Conway in December 1947.

Any help would be gratefully received - Thank you - Carole

Hi Stewart - Thanks for your email & for searching records. I have no idea of the name of Eric's wife from the Channel Isles. The only marriage record I've managed to find for an Eric Hopwood was to a Margaret Lloyd in Hawarden in 1938. This would make Eric only 19 & I'm not entirely convinced these people belong in my family tree - just this weekend I had a root around Hawarden church grounds & there's a headstone for the 2 people named, showing their deaths within 3 months of each other in 1972! All in all it isn't adding up really. I will see if I can find death records for either/both which may give me an indication of ages, this will (help to) confirm or eliminate them.

I vaguely remember my grandma visiting Jersey/Guernsey in the 1970's & having a photo taken when she became an extra in a TV programme/film?! I assume she was visiting Eric on that occasion.

I can't even begin to tell you how difficult tracing the (paternal) Hopwood line of my family is proving to be. This is sooooo frustrating, especially as they are for several generations all originally from within the area where I live. I recently managed to trace Eric's twin (Ivor) to dying in  New Zealand (despite his daughter having believed he died in Australia).

I'll continue the hunt & post any update as I discover info.

Once again many, many thanks for your interest.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Ivor Hopwood - death Waitakere NZ 02.04.1966
« on: Saturday 22 August 09 16:16 BST (UK)  »
Although it still needs TBC I have info regarding my father's brother, who it seems came to NZ (despite my belief he'd died in Australia!). The record relating is: Reg no 1966/28787 - family name: Hopwood - Given name: Ivor - age @ death 46y. The cemetary record states; Soldiers burial M Row 4, Plot 47 - telephone technician.

Census records - not kept by NZ? (I understand)

Military records - Help on how to find these would be great.

Imigration detals - as above  ::)

I'm asking a lot I realise but ANYTHING of advice would mean I can continue my hunt.

Ivor was born in Mynydd Isa, North Wales on 04.07.1919 to William Alfred Hopwood & Annie Connah. I have no idea when he left the UK but it seems he married for the 3rd time in Manchester in 1954. Whether his wife emigrated with him I don't know????

Families hey  :o

Many thanks - Carole

Hoping to find info re my father's brother Eric Hopwood, twin of Ivor (1919) - other siblings are 2 sisters & then my father. All born in Mynydd Isa, Mold, North Wales. Father= William Alfred Hopwood & mother = Annie Connah.

I always understood that Eric died in Jersey but another family member believes it could have been Guernsey!

Having (potentially) tracked down Ivor's death to New Zealand in 1966, I'd really like to know what happened to Eric?

ANY info or ideas would be gratefully received.

Many thanks - Carole

Fantastic!  ;D Thank you sooooooooo much. As I haven't found any other relatives (yet) who emigrated, it really isn't worth my while upgrading my Ancestry subscription to worldwide.

Thank you - Carole

Australia / What happened to Ivor HOPWOOD who died in Australia
« on: Sunday 16 August 09 17:40 BST (UK)  »
Ivor disappeared from the radar mid 1950s! He married IRIS DAVIES prob in 1939 or 1940 - then (it seems) married again in 1951 in Manchester (to THURSFIELD), then again in 1954 in Preston (to BROWN).

The family belief was he died in Australia but nobody knows where - when - or how????

Australia is a vast place & this is just another stab at finding something, anything. Ivor was the father of my (newly discovered) cousin & she has been obsessively trying to trace her father for a number of years without any success.

Carole

Name now corrected

Travelling People / William C Malpass
« on: Sunday 16 August 09 17:04 BST (UK)  »

My grandmother, Annie Connah (maiden surname), Hopwood (first marriage surname) married William C Malpass in 1939.  It was her second marriage after becoming a widow a couple of years earlier (& being left with 5 children at the age of 37!). William's profession is shown as traveller on their marriage certificate & I can't find any other information regarding him.

I realise this is a very long shot at finding anything buy hey....

Help or ideas welcomed.

Many thanks - Carole
