Hi all,
I think if i can give you all my trail history regarding George and Jane, starting with a few people whom i know to be dead-certs (no pun intended).
My father John's father was Ralph b.1886-d.1938 he was a coal merchant in Newcastle, his father was George (Heckels)Douglas b.1860 in South Shields. The "Heckels" part comes from his Mother,Isabella's maiden name, why he inherited this middle name i'm not sure but his older brother Matthew b.1853  had the same " Heckels" in his full title.
George (1828)married Isabella in 1852 in South Shields, she died in 1869 and George went on to marry Ann Tiplady in 1872 in Jarrow.
Peggy, you will in fact have George as a widower in the 1871 census but is he the one living at Harton Colliery Double Row,Harton,Co.Durham along with his children and the eldest being Matthew(heckels) 18,Isabella 13,George(heckels) 11,Sarah Ann 8 and youngest son Joseph 5.
This is where the trail goes a bit sticky,my George's (1828) father was definitely named George as i have this on his Marriage certificate to Isabella Heckels.Maybe i have gone wrong tracing back from there and found a George with parents George and Jane and took it for granted that this was the same family, there are so many George's involved here it is so frustrating.
Peggy,i'm not sure if this helps clear things up a little in your search and your mind and hope it hasn't confused you as much as it has me.

Any more help would be appreciated before i lose my mind !!!!!

Kind Regards,

Bykerlad.

Peggy and Michael,

I must admit i'm a little confused with this topic now as i have traced George and Jane back to census 1841.
Maybe the confusion is that i am going off the correct spelling of Douglas with a single 's' on the end, which is how my name is spelt.I have a record of George and Jane's (meggison) marriage at Gosforth St.Nicholas on April 25th 1833.They had children,George(1828) Jane (1828 ?)William (1831) Elizabeth(1835)and Thomas (1837) although 3 of the children were born before the marriage,i think it was commonplace in those days as much as it is now.
They were living at Lane House,Kirknewton,Howtel,Northumberland in 1841.George was born in 1791 and Jane in 1801.

I also have a copy of George's (1828) death certificate stating that he died in 1914 aged 86yrs old,he was a colliery overman, born in Stanhope,Co.Durham. The person who reported or found him dead was his son in law Thomas Prince according to the certificate,Thomas actually married George's daughter Annie in 1906, so this kept me on the trail thinking i was correct.George died at Heworth,Co.Durham which is where the family lived at the time according to census records.
George (1828) who i believe to be my great, great grandfather was married twice, the first was to Isabella(heckels)1852 and the second was to Ann(tiplady)1872 this marriage produced the daughter Annie.
Now that you have both come up with a different George and Jane this has thrown my research into serious doubt and i am now starting to think i have been chasing the wrong family all this time.
It looks like i'll have to start all over again,or maybe i am on the right track, would appreciate both of your inputs, that is, if i haven't confused you or put you off.

Regards,

Wow !!!!
This forum is so overwhelming.

Ruskie,i tend to agree with you on the 1850 marriage and am going to purchase the certificate. As for Dolly,i did think about the possibility of her being James' grandmother, looking at the household and their ages it means she had the youngest child at the ripe old age of 51,very doubtful i think but who knows.

Jora, your information has opened up so many new avenue's for me and given me so much more to explore.Loved the news about the Berwick Bridge, brings back so many fond memories, beuatiful part of the North-East.

Michael,i do agree with you also in thinking James got off lightly,i can only say that hopefully was the only member of the family to have been locked up(you never know tho').Great note about the Carlisle railway line, still the quickest way to cross the two counties in my opinion, certainly the most picturesque.

Once again, thanks to all of you, your help is so much appreciated.I will keep you posted on my progress.

Absolutely dumbfounded at the response !!!!!

Thanks so much for the replies regarding my thread.
Eyesee and jimmijam, thanks very much for the criminal records, now i know what he did to deserve his sentence.
Ruskie, thanks for the info about Irish history,it is frustrating trying to trace anyone back there.
The address i have him with mother Dolly(dorothy) is in Berwick 1851,as i said his wife Catherine is there with him.i originally traced his marriage to Catherine to 1855 in Berwick her maiden name was McDonald but i have since found that a James Bracken married a Catherine (nee leunan) but way back in 1850,also in Berwick.
This would be the more likely of the two as james and catherine's first child was born in 1851 also in berwick, just gets more complicated eh.
Anyway, once again thanks for the warm welcome and interesting responses.
kind regards,

brand new member on this site and wish i had found it earlier.am researching my  great, great grandfather james bracken.born 1828 allegedly in roscommon(ireland).i have a census transcript with him living with his mother dolly(not sure if that is short for something else) and his wife catherine whom he married in berwick in 1855.i can trace him further on along with his children and lo and behold he ends up at 'her majesty's pleasure' in newcastle upon tyne, for what reason i dread to think !!
any information on his parents and exact birthplace would be of enormous help as i am pulling my hair out trying to trace him.
many thanks,so glad i have found this forum.
