Yorkshire (North Riding) / Re: Dunnington or Walmgate? Alice Taylor

Yep,
That's the IGI reference I thought was the right one as well. That's a good idea with the checking point. I haven't done that before but it's probably a good idea in this case.

Thanks for the help.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Dunnington or Walmgate? Alice Taylor
« on: Wednesday 27 January 10 16:47 GMT (UK)  »
My Great Great Grandmother Alice Taylor was most likely christened on 28 Sep 1875 at Stockton on Forest Parish Church. There are two Alice Taylors born in York in 1874-5, one in Dunnington, one in Walmgate.

From what I can see from census districts, Stockton on the Forest was in Walmgate but the 1875 birth is in Dunnington. The 1874 birth is in Walmgate, do you think this is a safer bet? I'll be able to tell whether it is the right one once the certificate comes as I know she was illegitimate and I know both her Mother and Father's names from various family records, but I don't want to buy extra certificates unnecessarily!

Thanks for your help.

That James Jones and Jane Hughes married in 1848 and they moved to India because he was a soldier in the KOYLI (51st regiment). Don't think it is anything to do with the person being requested here.

Durham / William Anderson Lamb - Bastardy Bonds
« on: Wednesday 25 November 09 15:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Just found this baptism record for my GGGG Grandfather William Anderson Lamb:

Location: Chester-le-Street
Church: St. Mary and St. Cuthbert
Religion: Anglican
5 Apr 1801 William Anderson Lamb, of Sunderland, illegitimate son of Elizabeth Lamb (single woman, native of South Church)

As it is pre-Poor Law, I was wondering where to look to see if there had been a bastardy bond for him (I am guessing his Father's name might have been Anderson).

I am in Germany so I would have to use the Archives Research Service and would need to minimise the time I would have to pay for, so should I be looking in:

a) The Chester-le-street Parish Records where he was baptised
b) The Sunderland records where he was born

or

c) The South Church records where his Mother was from?

Any help much appreciated, and if anyone knows anything about the family I would be pleased to know and can share what happened to one line of his descendants.

Thanks and Kind regards,

Thanks for this Tati,
I'd missed your latest reply. I picked up Matilda's birth certificate and she was definitely illegitimate and born in the Brewood Workhouse  :(. The new information you have provided will be very useful.

Europe / Re: Why can't I find references to Nobbe?

There are also quite a few Friedrich Wilhelm Nobbes on the IGI. Mostly in Westfalen.

I have found Friedrich Wilhelm Nobbe in the Niedersachsen Auswandererarchiv:

Name: Nobbe, Friedrich Wilhelm

Herkunftsort: Rinteln

Beruf/soziale Situation: Knopfmacher

Vermögen: ohne

Auswanderungsziel: Amerika

Entlassungsdatum: 13.9.1853

Quelle: StA M 16 II 14 Nr. 23 Bd. 2 S. 5; Wochenbl. 1853 S. 380

He was a button maker and left Germany on 13 Sep 1853. He planned to go to the US (but not all people who planned to go to the US made it). He was from Rinteln, which I believe is in Lower Saxony. If this is your guy your next stage would be the Rinteln parish records as he would have been born before state registration. Schultz is less easy, it is one of your Smith/Jones type surnames. I am sure someone will be along to help you though.

Hope this helps.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: Missing presumed invisible 1881 census
« on: Tuesday 29 September 09 13:11 BST (UK)  »
Aaaah, I do have a family story which is soooo random that I don't believe it plus it didn't fit in with the wedding certificate!

My Great Aunty said that Alexander's family were well off and didn't approve of Mary Ann. So they sent him to America for 10 years to stop him marrying her but he came back afterwards and married her anyway. This made no sense whatsoever unless they sent him to the US aged 8 and seen as his Dad is listed on his wedding certificate as a colliery foreman, this didn't fit in either. I thought maybe she was confusing Alexander with Mary Ann's being born in Canada. Nevertheless, maybe no kids turned up for so long BECAUSE he was in America but after they got married. Doubt it was cos of family disapproval though, miners being funny about miner's kids doesn't quite ring true. On 1911 census Mary Ann says she had 3 kids which died sadly not whether they were Walter Asquith's or Alexander's.

That is a possibilty for her parents though and might explain why despite Mary McKeown's wedding parish record and the 1861 census saying she is 'of Montreal' why we cannot find a baptism for her in the Drouin. Ilkeston is definitely right for my James as is age and employment.

Thanks for trying. The help is really appreciated!
