How are you connected to Alfred?

I've been scoping my files looking for a way to help you identify your Alfred. At first glance, it looks like this Alfred may be akin to my line, but my James Ireland did not marry in Quebec - none of my Irelands married in Quebec -  although my James has a brother Samuel.

Then I started thinking on your dates and I wondered if your Alfred might actually be the son of an Elizabeth - who happens to be the sister of the brothers aforementioned.

In 1836 the brothers Samuel and James would have been but 15 and 18 years old while the sister Elizabeth would have been 25. These brothers and sister are just three of the 8 children born to George Ireland and Mary Featherstone. This is the group in my line that first arrived here in Canada.

If this assumption works, that would make Alfred the nephew of Samuel and James, grand child of George and Mary (Featherstone). Pure speculation on my part.

Unfortunately, I've stored my archive discs as I'd been renovating and only have my direct lines available on this computer, but will spend time in the next couple of weeks to dig up my discs - maybe a Thanksgiving weekend project -  and check for that Alfred; my master file has the list of all the kids of the kids of the kids and so on and so on - I feel I remember seeing him (Alfred) somewhere in my geno.

I did scope out ancestry looking for George and Mary and their kids but found little of use.

We'll keep in touch

I really should invest in a family tree application eh? !!

Hi,

I'm wondering if our Gosticks are linked.

I posted here looking for an Edward Gostick. Born 1843 Clarkenwell.

If you wouldn't mind, taking a look at my posting and the kind replies, perhaps there may be some connection you'd see I don't have.

My Gosticks migrated to Canada to the Muskoka region.

I look forward to hearing from you

Misha

Hi Monica,

Yes, the wives names, and the destinations. This line migrated to Canada's east coast - New Brunswick

I noted the errors/mis connections/ inconsistencies on Ancestry too.  I did as much as I could at the National Archives here in Ottawa and trailed back as far as I could to/in Scotland.

I am fortunate as my mother is #10 in a line of 19 children and some of the older siblings have/had good memories and stories from my g grannie who recorded stories from her mom and grannie (my Agnes) in her journals (along with some recipes!).

Because of the dates I''m working with here, I expect to use caution in securing a line. Maybe I'm being too lofty.

I feel pretty strongly that these people were in the Kirkcudbrightshire area because of my Agnes Tait b. 1799 (Roberts Daughter). She married a Cuthbertson from the same vicinity.

I think I'm just going to have to head to the UK to sort this out  ;D

Thanks again

Kind regards,
Misha

Hi and Thank you Monica.

Love the link! I'll be spending a fair bit of time there I think.

I read that post you noted a few times. names are good, dates aren't meshing and this family headed to Austrailia (sunny), my line went to Canada (snowy). <sigh lol>

The notes you found weren't for my line unfortunately. I do thank you so much for the time you offered to search for me.

I think the era is going to be challenging to secure information on, but I try every so often to see what might have popped up. I'm searching another couple 1700 and 1706 which is feeling impossible - ah well, its all a good romp through time!!

Again thank you very much for your contribution.

happy weekend!

Kirkcudbrightshire / John Tait and Margaret Dickson mid 1700's
« on: Saturday 15 August 09 17:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi fellow researchers and greetings from Canada!

I am looking for information on John Tait and Margaret Dickson. These are my Great (x5) Grandparents.

I have John Tait b. 1730 - Scotland. I suspect he was born in the district of Kirkcudbrightshire as this line I''m following has multiple generations in this area.

My John married Margaret Dickson. I have no information on her at all, and am quite interested in her.

I found a Robert Tait b. 1769 which noted my John and Mary as his parents.
From that point forward to me, I have good connections.

Robert's children (including my ggg grannie Agnes) were born in Urr, Kirkcudbrightshire which is why I think that both my John and Margaret, and their Robert were in this area.

Anyone with information or potential connections, I'd love to hear from you!

cheers
Misha

Thank you so much for all this information.

This line is full of knots for me and is my direct paternal line, so rather important to my research.

There are a lot of Gosticks listed in the Mendora County/Muskoka region of Ontario and there is some confusion with many Edwards, Harriets and Samuels.

I found,  thanks to your contribution regarding estimated date of departure from UK, a needed correction in my files. Edward and Sarah Ann apparently had two children in London before arriving in Canada - there were:

Arthur Edmond b. 1866 London England d. 1889 Foots bay Ontario (from Falling trees - this wasn't uncommon)

Helen Julia b. 1868 London England m. Edward John Woodroffe (this event was Canadian.

Much of my confusion around this line was the Samuels and Edwards with the Wilkinson name. I had not had Harriet Wilkinson's name to go with my Samuel - and the documents I'd been given noted Sarah Ann Wilkinson twice, as wife to both Samuel and Edward.  You have been very helpful.

I'd agree with you re: the criminal record of Samuel.

Again, I Thank you so much,

Misha

My pleasure, this is a primary paternal line for me and one that is of high interest to my research.

This research has been conducted by many people over the course of many years. My Great Uncle Garnet began it all well over 45 years ago. Most of the information I have has been handed from his work. My cousin Roger’s wife Teresa picked up the ball some 20 years ago and I started in on the project about 12-14 years now.

Both Teresa and I are members of an Ireland Surname research group which Y-DNA tests for lineage. The research group has members in the UK and they have been instrumental in clarifying some of the Ireland lines which are being researched. As a result of all this and the DNA project, I know this is my line.

The information I have offered here has been connected to parish records, and I have notes on confirmation up to, but not including my Moses. To date, my primary hitch to deepening my line has been this Moses. I haven’t been able to confirm his parentage.

On the note of his christening at 20 – PURE speculation (excitement) on my part. As my current records note he was born 20 yrs prior to marriage and children. Sincerely, after I posted that note, it occurred to me that there could well be document confusion (whacks forehead). However, I am fairly certain that my Moses was married and procreating by 1773 as we have been able to confirm his third child George as a grandparent to me.

I pulled up some old genfiles and noticed that in all cases, my notes will read NAME, SURNAME (FATHERS NAME/GRANDFATHERS NAME) For my Moses the original genfile reads: IRELAND, Moses (RICHARD).

All that to say, you may well have the link resolving the parentage of my Moses in your desk!!

exciting stuff here
