Ireland / Marriage Records in Limerick - Cork Area 1830-1840's
« on: Monday 07 November 16 21:12 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for the marriage record for John Carroll b. ca 1825+ and Johanna Hartigan b. ca 1825+. Their first child was Maria and she was baptized Jan. 18, 1847 in the Catholic church in Effin, Limerick. The church records didn't have a marriage record for the couple. Is there another place that I could look? Thank you for any help. Bunny

Hello Mary, In my previous posts to CARROLL- HARTIGAN I've told the story of my research thus far on the Carroll's. How did you find information on the MOLONEY'S and their tie in to the CARROLL family? Maybe this isn't my family and it is just a quirk of fate that lead me to a Maria in Limerick. I started looking at passenger lists to South Australia because I know that she was in the Adelaide area because that's where she married John Taylor and had three children.I have all the records to support these events from St. Patrick's. I really didn't know where to look for her in Ireland. The church records in Effin, Limerick have a record for Maria Carroll and the birth date is the same that I have from her baptism along with the same parent names that are on her death certificate, John Carroll and Johanna Hartigan.
I guess if this were easy it wouldn't any fun but it would be nice to get answers that fills in some blanks once in awhile. Hope to hear from you, Bunny [Elaine Taylor Ryczek]

Hi Kris - The Maria Carroll on the ship Mary Shepperd  is 3years older than my Maria Carroll but people do lie about their ages for whatever reason. Trouble is that there are so many Maria Carroll's. I'll keep trying. I guess if this search was easy it wouldn't be any fun. Hope that your research is going better than mine. Thank you for the info, Elaine "Bunny"

Hello again - The three children of Maria Carroll and John Taylor were all baptized at St. Ignatius Church in Norwood. Maybe there is a connection between the families. Bunny

HI Kris - I don't know if Mary was a second wife or not but that record of  the Charlotte Jane was what lead me to look for my great grandmother's birth in Limerick. The family on the Charlotte Jane may not be my family because of birth records that I was able to get from the church in Effin. John Carroll and Johanna Hartigan had other children born there:- Catherine born in 1849, Michael born 1852, Joanna born 1853, another Michael born 1858 and James born in 1864. So it looks like they were still in Ireland. The birth record for Maria Carroll I got first from the Irish History Foundation website and then from the catholic church in Effin - Our Lady Queen of Peace. Of coarse I could have the wrong Maria Carroll but what are the chances of two people being born on the exact birth date and with the same set of parents that are on her death certificate from New York City. My father and his siblings didn't know much about their grandparents such as any brothers and sisters or when she went to South Australia. There is a Thomas Carroll listed as a witness  on some marriage records that I have  for 1866 and 1870. These names are all so common - that doesn't help with the problem.                                        Thank you for your response, Bunny

Hi - wish I could help you but I have very little knowledge about the Carroll's. My great grandmother, Marie Carroll, was born in Effin in 1847. Her parents were John Carroll and Johanna Hartigan.  In 1863 she married John Taylor in Adelaide, South Australia and had three children. She came to America [New York City] in 1876 with the three children. I haven't been able to find when she went to Australia. Was she an adult or did she come with her parents when she was a child? So many unanswered questions and I wish that I had information for you. The Catholic church record start in Effin in 1834 so they would not be too helpful. Good luck with your quest. Bunny

My Great Grandmother, Maria Carroll was baptised 18 Jan. 1847 in the Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace, Effin. Her parents were John Carroll and Johanna Hartigan. The sponsors were Thomas Hartigan and Joanna Quinlan. I am interested in all these families. Elaine D.

Hi Greg, I have received some birth records for my family - the Carroll's and the Hartigans. Farther Coughlan sent them to me in October. I have sent another request along with another donation for marriage records. That was in November and I haven't heard back as yet. I imagine that Father is pretty busy being he is the only one at the church. How big is the cemetery in Efin? Have you gotten in touch with the LIMERICK County Council for information on your family?
Thank you for the information, Elaine D.

Have any of you researched in the Effin area. I am interested in the Effin RC Church records. Are the priests willing to do research for a donation to the church? Would there be any other records besides Griffith's? Thank you in advance for any help, Elaine D
