Lanarkshire / Re: Hillicks help needed
« on: Wednesday 02 January 13 12:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there the earliest Hillicks I could trace was James who was born in Armagh, Northern Ireland and was married to a Rose Ann Mathews who was born in Antrim probably around 1820 ish. They moved to Partick in Glasgow and their son William was born on 16th July 1846 in Greenock.  There seems to have been only 1 family Hillicks that moved to Glasgow, had various children.  The name is very rare in Scotland and all stems from James and Rose Ann.

Stirlingshire / Re: Rea Family - Little Canglor & Milnquarter
« on: Thursday 29 November 12 14:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi colliecat I had started this post ages ago and given up hope!!!!

Your Rae is a bit earlier than I have but the similar name and place ie Little Canglor seem to be very similar.  The first Rae I came across was Margaret Rae sometimes spelt Rea - she was born on 3/3/1784 in Milnquarter, St Ninians in Stirling.  Her parents were John Rae (Rea) who was born on 16/7/1752 in Little Canglor, St Ninians.  I live in Stirling and know St Ninians but can't find any reference to Little Canglor - I am assuming it was maybe a farm/land.  John Rae's parents were John Rae and Jean or Jane Ure and they were married on 18/8/1751 in St Ninians but that is far as I could get.  The parish records become too sparse.

The Gourlay's are a main part of my tree and seem to have originated in the Falkirk area which is near Stirling and Kilsyth.  NOt sure if you can add anything else?  Any information would be great to try and share

Armed Forces / Anyone any idea if this is a miltary uniform?
« on: Sunday 13 May 12 12:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi I wonder if you can help?  My grandfathers step dad we think served prior to WW2 and perhaps even in WW2 and I wondered how I go about finding out if there is a service record?  Will the MOD tell me if there is a service record?

I did the same for my grandad but in his case I KNEW he served.  The person I am looking for is Eric Leonard Rolfe born Henley in 1905 and he married my great grandmother Isabella Ward on 27th September 1947 in West Ham and died on 18th July 1968 in Stepney.  Basically all I am looking to know is are there any records for him and if so I will follow the normal process and look at ordering them.

The only photo I have of him in a uniform is

With his age he is too young for WW1 and in the photo he looks maybe too young for WW2

Can anyone help?

I got him!!!!!!!

Here is the link I found

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&rank=0&f4=charles&f5=ward&sx=&rg_81004011__date=&rs_81004011__date=0&f13=&f12=&f19=&f2=&gskw=vic*&prox=1&db=britisharmyservice&ti=5538&ti.si=0&gss=angs-d&pcat=39&fh=2&h=2047341&recoff=

Very exciting but I cannot work out if he died as a result of injuries/illness during the war - he died in 1921 and exactly what regiment he was in - very confusing

Hi lowanslow I thought about that but there is a birth in 1898 for a Charles Henry Ward which ties in with that death.

I am even starting to think maybe he died in WW2 instead? Maybe he was shot in France/Belgium but maybe he was older and instead was shot then?

Is that possible?

Hi ady that one is Charles Heber Ward born Walton on Thames enlisted Stratford.  The middle name and place of birth are wrong unfortunately.  Are there any others on your database that were born or enlisted in Stratford that we could check?

Thanks again for your help
