Fife / Re: help to find John Aitken - Mary Illson
« on: Monday 28 October 24 04:05 GMT (UK)  »
A long shot replying to posts from 2011 but worth a try...

Recently I've been researching the George Hunter from Kirkcaldy who (possibly/probably?) married 1st Catherine Aitken and 2nd Mary Dow.

I have DNA matches that go back to George and Catherine's children. My unproven theory as yet, is that Catherine Aitken was the daughter of John Aitken and Mary Illson, and John Aitken is the brother of my ancestor Janet Aitken (daughter of James Aitken and Janet Brown) who married William Gibson.

Hopefully someone is out there still who may know about this   :)

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Second cousin DNA match?
« on: Thursday 03 October 24 13:59 BST (UK)  »
It seems low to me but I’m no expert.
I checked my and my 4 siblings range to a 2nd cousin and it was from 281 to 376cM.
Another 2nd cousin ranges from 146 to 282cMs.

I really think your Nan has given you her answer already with her negative feelings about DNA. Your relationship is much more important  than revelations that are likely to cause emotional harm to your Nan.
In this case I think you need to choose family over names.
Such a tough situation though, my heart goes out to you.

Thanks, I saw a record on Ancestry for the Justitia. If I remember correctly it had his age and some other information.

The pet form of the name John in Scotland was traditionally Jock. Going one step further with that name we have the pet form "Jockie" (or Shockey as the clerk thought to spell the name in the court documents) ....

Oh, that makes a lot of sense, thank you  :)  Local knowledge goes a long way with family history research I've found.
Cheers,

Aberdeenshire / John Garden aka Shockey de Garden
« on: Wednesday 05 June 24 01:40 BST (UK)  »
Yesterday I was trying to find more information on John Garden (or Gardiner) shoemaker of Aberdeen, who was dead before 1828. (This information is from his daughter Charlotte’s marriage to Thomas Watson that year in Aberdeen).
I came across a John Garden alias Shockey de Garden who was convicted of theft at Aberdeen in 1816 and sent to Australia. The alias intrigued me. I don’t know if he is my John Garden, probably not, but does anyone know more about Shockey de Garden? Even what the name might mean or originate from?
Many thanks,
Marlene
