Glad you found this useful, Mike. Please ask your relative in WA to contact me as I have documentation and we are gathering information on the girls who sailed on the Palestine to WA and sharing this information with the Castleblakeney Heritage Centre in Galway.

Hi Mike,
Catherine Tully (b. 1830) came to Western Australia on the "Palestine" with 30 other single young women (orphans of the famine). We have now discovered that these women came from the Mountbellew workhouse in Co Galway who would have sponsored their passage to WA. I have seen her name recorded as both "Tully" and "Fully". There was also a Biddy Tully/Fully (b 1831) on the same ship to WA. Catherine Tully was from Castleblakeney in Galway and was actually a subsititute for another girl who fell sick and therefore couldn't sail to WA. I have little information on what happened to Catherine in WA, except that she was partner to Joseph Watkins (not sure whether they ever married) in York. Biddy Tully marries Samuel Willis in York in 1856 and she dies in 1907. My g, g, grandmother was on the same ship as Catherine Tully and she was also one of the three replacements chosen for a sick girls.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Anne

I have discovered more information about Catherine Tully who arrived in Western Australia. I note that a lot of the previous posts are quite old, but if anyone out there is still interested please let me know and I will share this information.

Hi Sue and Sue,
Unfortunately I have very little information about the Tully girls. I am researching a group of girls (to which they belonged) that came to Western Australia in 1853 on the "Palestine" to try and estbalish where they came from (which by the way is looking like Galway). I have no information about their parents, although next time I am at the library I will look their names up in the Dictionary of Western Australians which is where I have been able to track down quite a lot of info about other girls on the ship. I do know they were both married in York (a lot of the "Palestine" girls travelled to Toodyay and York) but have very little other facts to go on.
I will keep you posted if I find anything else!

Hi Mike, sounds like Joseph was quite the ladies man!
Do you know where in Galway Catherine Tully came from?
Many thanks,
Anne

I have been researching the single Irish girls who came to Western Australia in 1853 on the "Palestine" (as my great, great grandmother was on that ship) and there were two Tully girls on that ship, Bridget and Catherine. Both girls married in Western Australia and had children. Bridget married Samuel Willis in York in 1856 (I haven't yet, but could look up whether they had children if you like). SHe died in 1907.
Catherine married Joseph Watkins in York and I have found records of three daughters, MaryAnn, Harriet and Ellen, but there may be more children.
I have found that many of the girls on the "Palestine" were from Galway. Were the Tully sisters from Galway? If so, do you have any further information of where they came from and how they came to eimgrate to Australia (ie from a workhouse or other institution)?
Please let me know if you are additional information and I will see if I can access it for you.
Many thanks,
Anne
