Antrim Completed Look up Requests / Re: McWilliams & Steele Families
« on: Thursday 12 October 17 15:37 BST (UK)  »
This post was some time ago but only just came up when I put in a search for McWilliams in Belfast, Antrim.  I have a number of McWilliams in family tree so feel sure that dotcatt's McWilliams are related to mine, I have a tree on Ancestry and also had DNA tested if interested in investigating further.
My 3rd ggrandfather is John McWilliams also cannot find a birth date but assumed around 1820
His son, my 2nd ggrandfather William McWilliams was born 1845 in Castledown Co Derry and died 1923 Belfast Antime,
His daugther, my ggreatmother, Mary Ann McWilliams was born Magherafelt, Londonderry 1872 and died Belfast, Antrim 1956.
I am not able to find anything realted to John's siblings or other children other than my 3rd ggrandfather William McWilliams so would be interesting if the look up faclity here can find further information although not sure how to request this.
Best wishes
Eileen

How funny, I hadn't realised it was an old post.  I did try and find the date but could only see March so assumed it was from this year.
Interesting that the Malin name is further afield, I had assumed UK and USA.  Before delving into family history I assumed the name was from Ireland as there are a number of 'Malin' landmarks so was surprised to find the name 'Malin' in Essex back to 1500s.
I would be interesting if you have had your DNA tested to see if you match any Malins elsewhere or if it shows you as having a proportion of British DNA.  Although myself and parents were born in England, I have predominantly Irish DNA with British and Iberian Peninsula.  I did find that various grandparents, ggrandparents came from Ireland so initial shock was supported by research.
I searched for 'Malins' on RootsChat and was suprised to find a post of mine from 2006. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=172740.msg821245#msg821245
I couldn't remember registering before so now have two accounts.... ah well after 11 years I can be forgiven for forgetting.

My maiden name is Malin and i have traced Malins back to Orsett and surrounding areas of Essex in England. I am interested to hear how Malin came to be in Finland.  Are you aware if you have English roots.

Hello Helen
Many thanks for quick response.  I am in touch with a Valerie who is probably the same one and if so we have managed to find a link with our families.

I am a full member of GenesReunited but hadn't thought about any links to Maylin before (having always looked for Malin links).  It was only when reading the posting on here that it occurred to me that earlier census information had recorded Maylin rather than Malin and thought there might be a connection.   Alfred is a name that comes up a lot in my family as is Ellen, although I don't know of any Bertrams.

If you would like me to search anything on Ancestry.co.uk or GenesReunited, let me know.

I will check out the other names you gave me to see if there is any link.

Thanks
Eileen

I have posted a reply requesting information but repeat as new topic in the hope that someone is able to help.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who believes they may have links to Malin, Maylin in Orsett, Essex or thereabouts.

My single name is Malin and traced my family back to Orsett from my ggrandfather Henry Malin and then to John Maylin in 1816 (or possible 1818).  John Maylin married Phoebe Harrod in 1845.

The name Malin has been transcribed as Merlin, Maylen and Maylin at different times but was definitely Maylin in early to mid-1800s but later seemed to be more consistent with Malin.

I have been curious as to whether there is anyone who can trace back to John Maylin and Phoebe Harrod but who kept the surname Maylin or anyone who believes they are related.  To my knowledge John Maylin and Phoebe had the following children:

John, Joseph, Henry (my ggrandfather), Ellen, George and Sarah (all born between 1846 and 1865).

I would be interested to hear from anyone who thinks they may be related as I would like to be able to include any links in my family tree.
