Just realised you have taken it further since this posting and now know about your ancestor. The man I mentioned is just a coincidence.

There was a John Jeffries in the Royal Artillery during the Napoleonic Wars. Served as a Driver between 1803-1818. Discharged aged 34. He was from Duddingston, Midlothian.
Record held at the National Archive. Royal Hospital Chelsea documents.

Hi, Thank's for response. I've actually done that, but got conflicting information. I was told that only Officer's widow's received pensions, but was then told by another person that sometimes there was a Widow's Orphans's fund. Children were sometimes classed as Orphan's even if they still had one parent.
Was hoping someone on here could clarify this.

Marriage certificates don't always indicate whether or not father is deceased so best to keep an open mind about John being alive in 1889.

Have a look at Introduction to Irish Records and My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?.

Hi, Thank's for the input and links. I'll have a look at those. Regards, Russ

Thank's for the info. Could be something or just pure coincidence. Something to mull over though.

Cheers

Looking for information on John McMullan and his wife Catherine McCaughan, time period c1830-1900's.

John and Catherine had at least two children, twin boys, Aeneas and Francis, born 1860 in Loughuile.

Francis married Margaret Jane McFall of Carnkirk, Billy, in Ballymoney 1889.

According to Francis's marriage licence, John was listed as Pensioner, so obviously sill alive in 1889

Derry (Londonderry) / John McNICHOLL and Alithia O'KANE
« on: Tuesday 20 September 11 17:48 BST (UK)  »
Looking for any information on John McNicholl and his wife Alithia O'Kane of Londonderry. Time period, c1815-1900.

They had a daughter called Matilda, born c1847, who married James Grehan in Kilmaine, County Mayo in 1877.

Also two of John and Alithia's sons, John and James, ended up in Scotland. I believe they were boot and shoe makers.
