Hi Minnie,

Many thanks for all the links.
It has been ages since we did any Australian research and the Arthur J CURWOOD and his sisters Marion and Lilley of N.S.W. we do not know of. Same with the CURWOOD-STANLEY marriage in 1944 Perth. So I have made a note of them for future reference.
Thanks,
Les.

Hi Cr & Minnie,

Thanks for the link to your NZ posts.
That Arthur (1861-1936) and family is in yet another of our Curwood trees (we have about 40 different trees, some with only a few of families, others with lots).
However, it did provide us with the marriage details of Maud, so that was a bonus. Thank you.

Les.

Hi Cr,
I have checked the copy of the birth certificate for Arthur and it does say June. The certificate is a hand-written copy, not a scanned image of the register entry, so it might have been mis-transcribed onto the certificate. So either June or July could be correct. Therefore, need to keep an open mind regarding his dob.

John Joseph CURWOOD was born in Jersey, Channel Islands, as were his 9 siblings and parents.
A young brother to John, George Alexander (1840-1932) emigrated to Montreal Canada in 1875 and died there.
An even younger brother to John, Henry William (1848-1908) had a son Thomas Charles (1883-abt 1973) emigrated circa 1903 to the U.S.A.  Passenger lists destination Hamilton (1903), Buffalo (1908), Pittsford New York (1914). 1930 census in Mendon New York.
So Arthur could have been visiting his uncle George on his Canadian trips, or his cousin Thomas on his U.S.A. trips.
The Arthur you mention on the 1939 register address in Worthing dob 08 Nov 1867 as Arthur S Curwood is Arthur Samuel CURWOOD, born Uffculme Devon, died 1943 Newport, Monmouthshire, residence in Richmond Surrey, eldest son of Samuel and Jane (nee KENT). A completely different line of Curwood's.

Now, you have raised an interesting situation.
The June 1929 passenger list for Arthur, stated age 51, gives the destination as 49 King Edward Avenue Worthing which is the same address as the Arthur Samuel on the 1939 Register. So, either the age is incorrect on the June 1929 passenger list, (should be 61 to match Arthur S.) or Arthur was going to stay with Arthur Samuel. You say "there is another record of this man going out to Canada 3 Feb 1929 from that same address aged 61 (presume age was recorded wrongly)".
On this evidence, I am going for :- the age on the Feb 1929 passenger list is correct; the age on the June 1929 list is incorrectly stated as 51 it should be 61 and is therefore not the Arthur the son of John Joseph; as I very much doubt there is a very close relationship between Arthur and Arthur Samuel.  There may be a distant relationship but it will mean joining our two Curwood trees several generations back.

Hopes this all makes sense.

Devon Lookup Requests / Re: Florence Julia Howe DAVIES - Census
« on: Monday 17 August 09 00:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi Trish,

Thanks for the info.
In your email of 11th Aug, you asked "Were you aware that Thomas had three daughters by his second wife Julia Curwood?"
Florence was the first, who are the other two?

Also, you list the census entry 1871 Ashburton West street:-  "Rebecca Maria Davies 12 dau Newmarket Canada", she is enumerated as Rebecca Jane Davies".

Regards,
Les.

Hi Trish,
We are doing detailed research on the CURWOOD family name and had planned to order the marriage certificate of Julia CURWOOD until I found this thread which gave the necessary details. We only know of the one daughter, Florence Julia (or Isabel) Howe DAVIES, that has been listed here.
Please can you provide details, name-date-place, of the other two daughters - it will be very much appreciated.  Any futher information you have on the daughters of Julia DAVIES (nee CURWOOD) will also be gratefully received.

We have details of Julia's parents and 8 siblings if you are interested.

Regards, Les.

Hi Trish,
I have read the 3 threads you have posted about this family with interest as I am researching the CURWOOD family name in the UK.

I don’t know how much more research you have done or if you have purchased any of the suggested certificates.

The possible events I have found for Thomas Robert DAVIES and Julia DAVIES (nee CURWOOD) after the 1871 Census are :-

1881 Census  - RG11 Piece 964 Folio 68 Page 10
Registration District: Blean
Sub-Registration District: Whitstable
Census Address: 53 High Street, Whitstable, Kent.
Thomas R. DAVIES
Relation to Head of Family: Lodger
Condition as to marriage: Widower
Age: 51
Occupation: Agent Prudential Assurance
Where born: Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, Wales

GRO Death Index:-
Julia DAVIES died aged 40, June quarter 1872, Hereford, 6a, 306.
Thomas Robert DAVIES died age 60, Sept quarter 1886, Blean, 2a, 476

My theory and logic :-
The age at death of Thomas Robert DAVIES corresponds to the age given on the 1871 census (age 45), but not quite to the age given on the 1881 census (age 51 – it may have been mis-enumerated for 56). However, the GRO Death Registration District of Blean corresponds to the 1881 Census Registration District.

If Thomas says he was a widower in the 1881 Census, then Julia DAVIES (nee CURWOOD) would have died between the 1871 and 1881 censuses.
If Julia CURWOOD was born on 5 March 1832, then she would have had her 40th birthday in March 1872, i.e. before the Apr-Jun 1872 registration quarter.

Further possibilities :-
Julia may have died in or soon after the birth of another child as there are :-
- one death of a DAVIES aged zero in March quarter 1872 (Joseph)
- two deaths of DAVIES’s aged zero in June quarter 1872 (Ann and Edward)
- one death of a DAVIES aged zero in Sept quarter 1872 (Albert).
all for the Hereford registration district.

I would certainly suggest you get the death certificates for Julia DAVIES and Thomas Robert DAVIES.  Then, depending on the cause of death for Julia, the birth certificate for the possible child could be either :-
Mar 1872 DAVIES Anne    Hereford 6a 525
Mar 1872 DAVIES Joseph  Hereford 6a 542
Jun 1872 DAVIES Albert  Hereford 6a 511
Jun 1872 DAVIES Edward  Hereford 6a 500
Jun 1872 DAVIES Edward  Hereford 6a 514

Please let me know what you think and if you get any of the certificates.
Regards,
Les.
