Thank you - I'm grateful for all the help I can get on this, I'm sure they can't disappear totally, somewhere or someone will have some knowledge. Maybe a session with a regression therapist might be the only way! Thanks again. SS

My Gx3 grandfather was John Asquith who married Ellen Barnett at Bedale  (North Yorks) in Nov 1803, they had a daughter Eleanor born abt 1807.
Handed down family legend said that John was a sea captain and that there was a later family connection with Prime Minister H H Asquith although his family seems to be from West Yorks.. Did John originate from W Yorks??
Daughter Eleanor (my Gx2 grandmother) was brought up and privately educated by 2 maiden aunts, she married John Pearson against the wishes of the aunts as they said he was just after her money! I have a full record going forward re Eleanor but have been unable to track anything going back for her parents John and Ellen Asquith, no baptism or death. Do you think any of this has connections to your Asquith tree? I am at a great big brick wall now. Thanks for reading this.

Cumberland / William Martindale born Cumberland, UK

My Gt x4 grandfather was William Martindale, as evidenced on the Stanhope Church marriage register of his son Wm. my 3x GG (18/4/1840) where he is shown as a schoolteacher. I have had a 'brick wall' regarding Wm Snr but think I have had a breakthrough. His 1st wife Ann Currey (marr. 15/6/1815 at Stanhope) was buried the same day as son Wm was baptised (20/3/1816). The Currey family lived at Broadale House, Rookhope and I am making an assumption that Wm Jnr was brought up by that family because I cannot connect to the 'Weardale' Martindales and the only other possible Wm Martindale, schoolteacher  that I can find is on the 1841 census at North Shields married to a Margaret (marr @ Tynemouth 12/9/1824 & described as  a Widower), on the 1851 census his county of birth is Cumberland and his age 66 whereas on the previous census his age had been 50 so I cannot be sure of the y.o.b but prob about 1785.
There are several Wm Martindale on family Record but the best date appears to be 30/6/1784 to Joseph and Fanny nee Whitfield. I cannot find a record of this in the Bishop Trancripts. Can anyone advise where to look now for info re birth as I don't know the whereabouts of the villages, I know of Alston bordering Co Durham but the 'Alston garrigill' Bishop transcript has nothing I can see, and also are there school records re 'schoolteacher' because it is v likely that a parent would also be a teacher??? hope someone can help, thankyou. gem

Durham / William Martindale Westgate/Rookhope
« on: Tuesday 12 July 11 19:48 BST (UK)  »
Have made great headway over past 3 years with family tree but BIG stumbling block is back from my Gt x2 g'mother Ann/ Nancy Martindale who married John Forster 5/4/1862. I have tried GRO for her birth cert. under both first names, Ann as in 1841 census, living at Broadale House, Lintzgarth with family called Currey and Nancy as in 1851 census at Boltsburn Lane, with  parents Sarah (nee Collingwood) and William Martindale b1816, d1883, she is Nancy on other census, marriage & death cert.
Her father William m Sarah in 1840 but Ann/Nancy was born in 1839 so was her birth not registered or baptism recorded because she was born out of wedlock???
On marriage cert of Wm and Sarah the father of Wm is William Martindale, schoolmaster of Broaddale House, Lintzgarth. I believe he was born abt 1785, lived at Westgate and married Ann Currey on 15 June 1815 (that is probably the connection to family Ann/Nancy was with on 1841 census) but I cannot find a confirmation of a birth of William Martindale senior - Ann appears to have died on the birth of William but I cannot find Wm senior on any census or a death that fits. Where did he go?
There are other Martindales in Weardale but I cannot find a connection. Can you help? Is yr family connected?
Other Weardale connxs are Wall/ Forster/Oliver/Collingwood/Jennings/Adamson and many more.  Sorry to be so long winded! Gem.

Thanks Adam, not sure if or how they fit in tree as yet.
What I'm after is from 'hand down' information that a female relative (nee Pearson but don't know which one) who married and lived at  Sunniside was so loved and respected by the community there that when she died they erected a headstone and it was on the way up to the church. However it is possibly one that has been removed by the council - do they record the information from the stones before they are flattened or removed, have you any idea of that? thanks, and regards, Genie.
