Argyllshire / Re: Aitken/Crawford/Wilkie, Glassary

Hello Rhona, some useful bits there for me! I went to Lochgilphead many years ago knowing dad came from there but it weas long before I got into this and we were only there an hour or so. It's one of those things on my To Do list. My job gets in the way of a lot of research time so I tend to do it in fits and starts. My biggest hitch is locating any ancestors for my first Hugh Aitken (on tree above). I have hit a complete stone wall there. Maybe this Scotlandspeople can help, can't recall if I have used it before - probably! Unfortunately I also hada  puta crash recently and lost all my records and trees, though all are printed off. Have to re-do them! Very time consuminf.

Hello Allison, As you can see I don't seem to have a William. However we must be related! Maybe we can share some info? I have obviously gone wrong a few times with this line. Catherine

OK, Gadget, Will do! With this dreadful weather I am getting a lot done, and have added over 100 to me tree in a week, so it would be nice to try and complete this line properly.

Thanks for those sites, Gadget. I just went back through all I have and next to one name I have Dumfries, but am no longer sure whether that came from a record, so those sites should help a lot, many thanks.

Scotland / Dalbeattie: puzzled!
« on: Thursday 30 July 09 18:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am pursuing my Irving ancestors and they give Dalbeattie as the place of birth before leaving for Liverpool. They don't say which Dalbeattie. Is there any way of telling which, as I gather there are two. Also as there is only a Scottish census listed for 1901 what site do I need to find Irvings before that date in Scotland? I do want to be able to find them myself rather than some kind person doing it for me, but I am a bit nonplussed where to start having found not a lot in the usual census returns. Well, I say not a lot, but for eg I have six brothers, have found info for two who left Scotland and nothing for the others or the sisters.
Thanks, Catherine

Antrim / Re: Susan Oliver 1916

Thankyou, that might be helpful. I am usually good with documents and records but have become a duffer with the Irish and Scottish ones! Not sure how one goes about it though - new to the forum. I found Cavan in Google Earth, virtually on the Eire border. This Susan is turning out to be full of surprises, but I would like to purse her: my sister, named after her, bears an uncanny likeness so I feel I would like to find more for her.

I don't know how you guys have found all this out - I even tried the web links you gave and got nothing! Where is County Cavan in relation to Belfast? Thanks you so much for your time and help.

Thanks for the replies all. My only evidence, apart from her photo, is the birth certificate for my father, her son. It's for 1916, lists father as John Aitken, her as Susan Aitken, formerly Oliver, with the address of 14 Jaffa St. Now as to where I got that birth date from (after all it makes her 16-17 when baby born) I can't recall, but I must have got it from somewhere as I don't put dates down willy nilly! I suppose then I can assume it may not be certain. The idea that she'd been married before, funnily enough, was also mentioned by my stepmother who may have got it from dad. It sounds like, between you, you've found her for me! Which is pretty amazing as I just hoped someone might refer me to an Irish site I might not be aware of! Now I find myself wondering if she's the mother of the boy, James.
Anyway, thanks so much guys, you've been brilliant!

The Common Room / Re: Wanted - My Ancestor was a Murderer!

I have a great-uncle who disappeared without trace in about 1925 and apparently no-one in the family knows what happened to him, so I guess he could have been killed. Or, of course, just run off with another woman, changed his name, emograted.... I do have a relative mid 19C who was in gaol but I haven't succeeded in finding out why yet. Someone earlier mentioned the Wigan website so that might be a place to look since we're Wiganers.
Cheers
