Wow that was quick to get some answers!!!!! Thank you!!

I was led to believe it was nearer to 1776 he was born....where did you get the info about his father being called ralph and Ebenezers birth as 1771? and is it from somewhere i can look at please?

That tallys with his death in 1849 aged 77. Does anyone know if there are still gravestones standing from those times??? Although knowing my luck it will be a patch of bare grass as usual!!...haha

Am i pushing my luck to ask if anyone can elaborate or get any details from further back please??

Once again, thanks very very much mosiefish and radcliff.

John.

Lancashire / Ebenezer Leigh born c.1776-7

Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone has any info about Ebenezer Leigh? He was my 4x great grandfather. I know he was born in Lancashire in 1776/7 ish and died in horwich in approx 1849.  He married Betty Hope in 1790's, but i thin she died and he then married Ellen Crook.  He had a few kids with both wives, especially Ellen.  I am descended from his son William Willoughby Leigh.

The trouble is, i cant seem to find who Ebenezer's father was, or if possible, even further back???!!!

I live in Newcastle upon Tyne, so its not easy for me to get down to the Lancashire area to do research.  If its any help, it seems that most baptisms and marriages etc were done at St Katherines in heyrod???? or blackrod??

It seems that Leigh is quite a common surname in the lancashire area, so i am hoping someone has some info for me pleeeeeeease???!!!

Thanks all,

John

Hi everyone, thanks for all your help as usual.  I actually called into the grave yard a couple of days ago and found the correct section.  But i couldn't see a headstone or even work out where it should be, as there are so many blank spaces of grass with no stones at all.  I went back to Central Library, armed with names of a few headstones i jotted down.  After looking through the registers etc, i managed to plot the grave numbers of these stones and therefore work out the position of my ancestors in relation to some of these.

On my return to the graveyard, i did in fact manage to find their plot this time, but unfortunately there is no headstone!! Typical....just a lumpy patch of grass.  But at least i now know exactly where they are.

Thanks again everyone.

Thanks Michael, the address is tankerville terrace in jesmond i assume.......i am 99% certain it is the large cemetery just past the blue house roundabout on the great north road on the way to haymarket.

I have just found a burial register that says someone was buried in the grave in the 1870's, then 2 children in the 1890's and then the first of my relations in 1946 and finally her husband in the following year, 1947.  There is also a tiny bit of writing on the page that says that the grave was "purchased" by a member of the deceased wifes family a matter of weeks after the last burial. Am i correct in thinking that this means there will be a headstone, unless it has been damaged and removed?

As 1947 was fairly recent, i would assume that a headstone, if in existance, would still be there?!

i am sure tyne and wear archives will have maps, but i cant get there just now.

Hope someone can help,

Thanks

Hi Andy, That is brilliant!!!!!

I have just done a load of look ups for people here in Newcastle, so its really good to get the favour returned.  At least now i know that his wife Mary Jane did die before him....i just need to find out when??

I will send you my e mail add in a private message if you dont mind.

Also, if you are back there another day could i possibly be cheeky and ask you to look in the burials section for me please, that would be brill to have that too.

Do you know where this Bowling Cemetery actually is?? I am from Newcastle you see, so i don't know that neck of the woods.

Thanks again Andy

Your help is really appreciated

Hi Sandra

Thanks very much for looking for me.  I assumed he would have been there as the 1861 census said he was born in Badsworth.

All is not lost though as i have his marriage ref so i have sent off for his marriage cert.  I will keep looking through census's and see what else pops up.  Thanks again though sandra.

Hoping someone can help me PLEASE????

I am hoping someone will be visiting Wakefield Archives sometime soon and if you are could you please look something up for me??

I am looking for a baptism of Thomas Archer born in 1828 give or take a year, but i think its 1828.  He was born in Badsworth in Yorkshire. Apparently Wakefield Archives holds the baptism records for St Marys church in badsworth.  This is where i believe he was baptised.

I would be very grateful if someone could have a look for me please as i live 120 miles away and cant get there.

Thank you, my fingers are crossed.

John.
