Family History Beginners Board / Schools in 1900's
« on: Thursday 03 September 09 18:06 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know how I could find any past friends of my
Mums from about 1931 - 1935 it is possible that some of them may still be around, or if there are any specific sites which may cover 'older' friends?. Also, although she told me she went to Mornington Crescent School (Hackney I believe) it may have had a proper name, so where would be the best
place to look up school records?
Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / False Registration of Birth???
« on: Monday 10 August 09 21:15 BST (UK)  »
On the 1861 census it shows my Gt Gt Gt Grandparents as having a son Alfred born 1847. It also shows another Alfred as grandson born 1854. I have obtained Alfred b1854 birth
certificate but it shows my GGG Grandparents names. The Mother is Jane. They also had a daughter Jane who's name
incidentally is at the bottom on the census next to young Alfreds. As she and her mother had the same name, would
it have been possible for her to give her Mums name which was the same as hers (Jane Hatton) and because she was probably unmarried, her father as the dad to make it look like they were in fact his parents. How easy (or not) would it have been then to do that? Jane is only 21 on the census though.

Hi Carol,   Yes he's the one - a right rogue by all accounts. I think he must have ended up on a ship to somewhere because his daughter (my nan) said he was ships captain!
(ha! ha!) and I suppose it's possible thats what her Mum told her.
Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Police 1900's

Does anyone know if becoming a Policeman in the 1900's was a strict as it is today? - My Gt Grandfather who I cannot
locate the death of or what happened to him, went to prison
3 times - 1898,1899 & 1901 (theft every time) the only person with same name and age - John Luton b1879 comes up on the 1911 census as a Policeman. I know he married in 1901 and that his wife was with someone else by 1904. :'(

England / Divorce

As I am unable to find my Gt Grandfathers Death anywhere, and his wife is
remarried 6 years after their marriage, where can I look to find if they were
divorced without actually knowing if they were?
