Wow, thank you Ladyhawk!

This is brill.  This man has been doing my head in for months, he has been shelved for ages.  Seems as though this is him!

Thank you everyone for your input, I couldn't have done it without you.  :-*

does this entry seem a good bet for a birth cert.

Births Jun 1882
Bate  Joseph     Stoke T.  6b 271

I can make that year tie in with his age at death and his age at marriage.
The other entry in 1882 has a middle name so I have ruled that out.

I have had alook at the witnesses, suzard.

They are a Joseph Simpson Bell, Elsie Bell, Percy Williams and a Laura Sharp.  I have checked the writing style Bell to Bate, and it is a definate Bell.

I too wondered about the 'bachelor' bit, wondering if he had fibbed?

Thank you  :)

Hi  :)
Can anyone help me as to where to go next please?

I am researching a Joseph BATE.
He was married (aged 33 and listed as a miner) in 1915 in North Featherstone to a Emily LOWE.
He died in 1947 in Featherstone. No DOB on certificate.

His father, according to his marriage certificate, was a miner called John BATE.

What I am trying to do is locate Joseph's  birth, I don't know where he was born and there are several births with this name around 1882, none of which are around the Yorkshire area.
How do I go about hunting his birth?  What/where should I try next? ???

thank you all for your replies, I am really grateful.

I have had a look around this site   http://stanleyroydhospital.fotopic.net/

It must have been absolutely horrific to have to stay there.

I shall contact WYAS, hope I don't hit too many obstructions.
Thanks again. x
