Lincolnshire / Clifford Spencer - Graizelound(Craiseland) Haxey
« on: Sunday 09 August 09 00:38 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for the family of Clifford Spencer of Graizelound(Craiseland) Haxey, Lincs.

Clifford and my late Grandfather William(Tom) Darby served together in 107 Light Anti-Aircraft Battery, 27 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery, during WW2. Both captured at Tobruk June 1942 and then together at a succession of POW Camps in Italy.

Cliffs daughter  submitted an article to the BBC Peoples War site which mentions my grandfather, and her father is listed in a diary of my grandfather.

I am currently working on a history of the Battery/Regiment and would welcome the opportunity to make contact with the family

Any assistance in making contact gratefully received.

Thanks

Chris

Brian

We have posted over on WW2TALK a few times.

I hadn't really considered looking at Escape and Evasion reports before, my Grandfather, along with so many others, escaped for about three weeks from Italian POW camp PG 54 in September 1943, brief mention in his Liberation Report, and then along with 12 other POW's from their Work Camp in Austria on 1 April 1945 and made their way to the Russian lines and repatriation via Odessa.

In your experince would Escape and Evasion reports also possibly have been submitted, and are they easy to locate, I have a list of all the names.

Also interested to learn about the work you have been doing on POW's in the North Africa Campagn, as you may recall my Grandfather was captured at Tobruk 21 June 1942.

Hi Hepburn

113 Bty., 27 Lt A.A.Regiment., Royal Artillery

Is the 113 Battery which was part of the 27th Light Anti Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery

The Regiment sailed to Noth Africa, leaving Glasgow, on 15th August 1941, arriving at Suez on 1st October. The Regiment was part of 12th Anti-Aircraft Brigade and as such was responsible co-ordinating ground defence of airfields as well as Anti Aircraft defence in general.

I am currently working on researching the history of the regiment, which comprised of 107, 113 and 149 Batteries, as my Grandfather served with 107 Battery, which was captured at the fall of Tobruk in June 1942. 113 Battery did not suffer the same fete, and went on to see action in northern europe.

Some further information can be found at http://www.27lightantiaircraft.co.uk/index.html but this work in progress and I haven't got as far as looking too much at 113 Battery.

It is possible to view the war diaries for the Battery at the public records office, Kew, which would give you a great deal more information.

Chris
