Staffordshire / Re: Marriage in Wombourne Staffordshire
« on: Tuesday 07 August 12 20:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi Pam

I have found this out for you?

William Bennett m Mary [or Mary Ann on some records] they married 27 Dec 1821 in the registration District of Dudley [which at that time Wombourne would have come under]

I have found censuses for 1851  1861 1871 where they are living in Wolverhampton & he is referred to as a Tinplate Worker or a Japanner [which is a worker in decorative tin? The main area for this work was around the Wolverhampton area good examples on the net]

William & Mary had George Davis Bennett b 1823 in Bridgnorth, then the family moved to Wolverhampton, where they had 9 more children.

On the census 1841 for Sarah Toy & her husband John, it states that they have living with them William Bennett b 3 April 1829 Wolverhampton & Ann Bennett 1826 Wolverhampton – I am assuming that these are children of William & Mary Ann as it states brother & sister?

Sarah & John live in Lower Street, Tettenhall, at the Swan Inn where he is a licensee – the Pub is still there today & I have actually drank in there numerous times!!!

I think that you were correct when you said that George Bennett & Ann Davis were Williams parents  --- George Bennett I think came from Himley [which is the next village along the A449 from Wombourne & they always have been very closely connected]

At the time of George’s birth in Himley, there is also a John Bennett b 1772 & Jane b1774 & in 1841 they were living at the Oat Mill Himley. Next door to them was their son John Bennett b 1799 Wombourne & Rachel b1804 Yeadon, Shrops – but in 1861 they were all living in the Blakeley area of Wombourne.
This is where it gets interesting as the Davis family live about ¾ doors away!!!

So I think that George left Himley for Bridgnorth, where William was born, then William still would have family back in Wombourne, hence the relationship & marriage to Mary, in Wombourne [Dudley district] Then he moves his family to Wolverhampton for the 1851 1861 1871 censuses.

So George Bennett had a brother John Bennett born in Himley & then both families moved to Wombourne.

I am still looking into the parents of George & John Bennett from Himley.

I have found what I think could be Mary/Mary Ann she was a Willis who married Joseph Massey 25 July 1808 in Kingswinford,
Sarah was born 1809 in Tipton, because Sarah was born in Tipton I am assuming that Joseph came from there & also worked there. Which would mean that Mary was living in, if not born in Kingswinford, originally prior to marriage [ Kingswinford is the next village to Himley]

it was also quite common for a child to have the Mothers surname as a middle name - so the Davis was the mothers name in your case.

I will still keep an eye out for any other information I can find for you.
I hope this a help to you

Kind regards

Pat

Hi Bob
This what I have got off the 1911 census:-
53   Bradmore Inn    Freeman Family
52   Smith Family
51   Besley & Shelley family
50   Kerry & Step Children Chambers MY FAMILY
49   Poutney Family
48   Talbot Family
47   Pugh Family
46   Johnson Family
45   Kelsy Family
then I think it is Maple Road of 9 houses
43   no record
42   Heeley Family
41   Roper Family
40   Clee Family
39   No Record
38   Taft Family - Lamp lighter & newsagent
37   Gunmakers  Vernon Family
So I think that the houses were all on the one side of the road -- then subsequently renumbered at a later date? This would fit the photo of Trysull Road that shows houses on the same side as the gunmakers & fields on the other? If this is so then my Grandmother's house would be in that line of houses?
To verify this now I need to get a map for 1911 & if that shows it with houses on the one side then I could be right?

Hi Bob

I think if I look at the 1911 census & see where the address are around my paternal Grandparents, see if that throws any light on the situation? I will keep you informed.
Many thanks for you help

Hi Bob

Thank you so much for that information, I am wondering if the houses on the other side of the road have been re-numbered at some point in time? But that still does not account for the missing numbers as it stands today?
I have looked at maps of the area for 1898 & 1890 & there is nothing on the other side of the road from 4 houses below the Star Stores? But then on a 1938 map it appears to be as it is today, with a space for the car park?
So I suppose what I need to find is a map c 1911 when the census took place. Perhaps that will throw some light on to the missing houses.
Thank you for your help

Can anyone help please? My Grandmother lived at 50 Trysull Road on the 1911 Census. The house numbers on the Gunmakers side of the road [as it is today] are 49 on the corner of Maple Road going down to the Gunmakers and the last house number is 61? Which are all ODD numbers.

So in theory 50 Trysull Road, should /would have been on the opposite side of the road. However the house numbers go from 46 on the corner of Wenlock Ave the side nearest Bradmore-- then coming down towards the mini island there is the Gunmakers car park which I am assuming is where the Old Gunmakers used to be? As the next house after the car park is 56!!! Which makes you think that 48-54 were knocked down at some point?

So were 48-54 along side the old Gunmakers and knocked down at the same time or were they built after & then subsequently knocked down?

As my Family were listed as living there in 1911 census it would mean that the demolition was after that date, to leave the car park as it is today?
Also does anyone have a photo of these cottages/houses to verify what happened

Any help would be appreciated
Pat
