Sligo / mckenna family
« on: Monday 24 August 09 18:38 BST (UK)  »
Hello again,  Sorry about the repeat of family but mckenna may have been known as macanna or something similar as accents can change the sound of a spelling.  John was illiterate and signed his name with an X i have found land registry (roads and highways) local councilparish wanted to build a road through his land.  John and Agnes nee jardine were roman catholics.

I wasnt sure whether or not coroners report would state that.  he was found the following day.  It was a busy river even then.

I found the death of my great grandfather who was found drowned in a river.  I also found a headline in evening chronicle stating 'Man's body found in River Tyne'.  part of the article described his height and what he was wearing and also the grizly fact that his left hand was missing.  He had lost his wife the year before to kidney failure.  He was reported missing one day a found the next.  The article stated that his body was in advanced decomposed.  Question I'm asking is would it be possible for one hand just to disappear through decomposition?  I dont know where to go to find out.

Thanks and sorry for gory details.

hi again,

My grandmothers family were mckennas and roman catholic they lived in same area at same time.  Just a thought for you St josephs roman catholic church is on Armstrong Road, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE4 area.  You could write to the bishop and priest and request information directly from them.  They allowed me so I'm sure that wont be a problem for you.  good luck I will still have alook though for you.  St James Church is Church of England so it's unlikely he would be buried there.  St johns cemetry seems the more likely and catholics could be buried there in consecrated ground.

hi erin

I live not far from st james church in benwell.  They do have a graveyard but it is very small.  There is a cemetry which is pretty huge at elswick just along the road.  90 second drive from st james church.  Your ancestor could have been buried there.  It was st. Johns cemetry which is not the newcastle district of st johns  so hopefully that will stop the confusion.  I will check it out and get back to you.

Also my James Boag was a captain in the merchant navy so it is possible that he settled in england.  Ooo good one never thought of that.

hi

My grandad always wondered.  I've seen the Boag beer in Newcastle Upon Tyne England.  Thought someone was taking the mick when I worked in a pub years ago.    I will check out that one as well.  My history is hopeless now I think Australia was inhabited by Europeans then (late 1600 -1700).

thanks
