Thanks for that.  I have sent an email to the Elections Office so fingers crossed someone can tell me where the records are held and if anyone can do a look up for me.

Hi Route66

Thanks very much for the link to the Salford.gov I have no problem visiting the web site and contacting the Elections office.  Unfortunately my only problem is getting to Salford,  I live approximately 250 miles away. Do you think maybe the Elections office will do a look up on my behalf?  I didn't know about the heritage centre either so thank you very much for that too.

No she died in 1999. Her first marriage was to Robert Shields who died in 1984 and her second husband Fred died in 1985. Laura was born in 1917.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Electoral Roll - Goodiers Lane Salford

Would anyone be able to do a look up for me? I am trying to find if Laura Shields was living in Goodiers Lane, Salford (Goodiers Drive ) as it is now known.  She was possibly living at No. 25 but not entirely sure. She may have used her maiden name of Burgland and she may also have been living there with her then boyfriend Fred Hobson. Fred and Laura married in 1954 by which time they were living in Manchester. They were still living in Manchester in 1955 and 1956. So I am looking at dates for Goodiers Lane either pre 1954 or post 1956 but believe it more likely to be early 50’s. I would be really grateful for any help with this. Thank you.

Hello Kooky

Just move your mouse pointer onto the map you want to look at and the pointer should turn into a hand,  click the mouse again to enlarge. I think you can do this a couple of times to enlarge it more.  You will then have to move the the slide bars at the bottom and right hand side of the screen to move around the map. Use the back arrow to get back to the original size and map. Good Luck

Hello Orinoco

I had infact found the brilliant website you suggested but Mansell Street isn't shown.  I now know its near Rutland Street, Greek Street and Bedford Street, so with the aid of the maps can identify some of the local schools closeby to this area. Thank you very much for your help and replying to my request.  Much appreciated.

Hi

Could anyone tell me where Mansell Street is in Chorlton on Medlock circa 1940-1943.  I am particularly looking for infant schools close to Mansell Street.  The family were Catholic so I dont know if this is likely to make a difference to the school he attended.

Thanks

You're right of course, I probably will never find all the answers and deep down I am prepared for this. Its only right that I dont get too obsessed in finding out about my Dads past and miss out on him in the here and now. Despite being deprived of love as a child my Dad has always been a giver of love, he adores children and is a brilliant granddad.  Infact I think he probably makes for a better kid now than when he should have been one officially! If you get what I mean!!
