I have now established fairly confidently the Walthews of Backford leading through Absalom/Abel into the 20 Th centuryThe current genration when last I contacted them are in Wales.

I am not sure if there is any link to the William Walthew, surgeon abt 1806 - 1872

I am researching Walthews and allied families.
I am not sure of the Anne reflected above, but the molyneux family is long associated with the walthews.
They come out of the Wigan area predominantly, though there are pockets in Warwick/staffordshire and around London.
The further south you go, the more the name is spelled WALTHO or WATHOE, but there appears to be some links.
I have been trying to link the William Walthew family from Anglesey back to either the Lancashire or Cheshire families.
The Lancashire families are related to the Syers, the Hollands, The Molyneux the markland, among others. In lancashire the family seems to originate in the Wigan area about 1550, and earlier than that a group in Kirkham in the 1515's.
In Cheshire there are records around Nantwich from 1515 , moving to Chester by the later 1500's.
The Walthews in London  are derived from the Wigan Walthews, but also seem to be linked to the Walthews from Stowe.

The early spelling is often phonetic, and varies from Walthewe to Walthooe for the same person in different records.
There are Walthews around sefton and Huyton about the mid 1700's and there is an anne daughter of Roger, but that is all I have

Sutherland / Re: MACKAY/MCKAY Family at Dornoch and Assynt

Thank you for the info re: Donald specifically his wife.
My son descends through his mother from mary who married Alexander Porter.
Don Porter from Durban in South Africa is a seperate descendent descendent.
My son descends: Alexander and Mary
                             Robert and Rose
                             Mary and Fenning Norman Kidson
                             Allan and Beryl
                             Anita and Edward
                             Ian or owen

Further, one of the Mackays of the family, recognised by allan as a cousin, was the first to fly solo from England to South Africa.

If you have any further information in regards to the nicholsons I would be grateful.
I feel there is some connection to Alexander Porter from Culsalmond to the Mackays, probably through the Nicholsons, but have not been able to establish anything.
It is through Don Porters work that i have established the link thus far.

Hi Sandra

Sorry to go back abit.
This is about the Walthew connection.
I think the "Abel Walthew" referred to in one of your earlier posts may be "Absalom Walthew" born about 1837, married 1857.

There was also a william Walthew who married Eliza L (Elizabeth) Jones about 1833 in Anglesey. William was born in Holyhead but there is no other record for him from the time period.
there doesn't seem to be any children. Eliza died in 1877 and in the land registration of the 1870's is lised as owning 22 acres in holyhead. This probably came to her from her father . It may be worth seeing if there is a link to the other jones's marrying into the walthews about this time.

As regards there are Hollands married into and from the Walthews from the 1600'sin and around Wigan, Standish, Upholland and Ince.
There is a marriage in the earlier 1800's and the name is carried down as "Elizabeth holland walthew"
If you have anything on Abel and/or absalom I would be grateful

Edward W
