Dumfriesshire / Re: Margaret Cowan - can't find death
« on: Friday 25 September 15 01:07 BST (UK)  »
Thank you everyone for your help.  I did not realise you could even include the maiden name. Which I didn't in this case but  I have found the DC and now have the information I needed.
However is anyone able to help me find her birth in the parish register and her marriage to Thomas Cowan in 1845 Johstone.  Perhaps once again I am missing something in the search as I can not find anything.

Thank you for the information.  I have all the census ones but no matter how I try, I can not find the death registration for Margaret on ScotlandsPeople. I have even narrowed the search down to the year and district.  I will however keep trying and thanks again for at least narrowing it down to a year (1880)

Dumfriesshire / Margaret Cowan - can't find death
« on: Thursday 24 September 15 02:44 BST (UK)  »
Margaret Cowan (nee Gibson) b abt 1824 Johnstone, Dumfriesshire, spouse Thomas Cowan b abt 1820 Kirkpatrick, Dumfriesshire.  She appears in the 1871 census in Kirkpatrick Juxta with the family but is missing from the 1881 census.  I have searched for her death between 1871 and 1881 on ancestry, scotlands people, and family search and have not been able to find her death registration.
I have not been able to find her parish birth register either, also their marriage details elude me.   The registration of the birth of their daughter Jemima in 1855 mentioned they were married in 1845 in Johnstone.  Thomas died in 1893 (widower of Margaret Gibson)
Can anyone help me locate any of these details or are there gaps in registration details online.
Thanks

Lanarkshire / Re: James Niel, Anderton help deciding possible parents

I do know from the 1851 census that there were 2 other sons, John born abt 1823 Glasgow and James born abt 1827 Glasgow.  Samuel was the middle son born abt 1825 (in Edinburgh if you can believe the Wikipedia article).  So far I have been unable to find any of their baptisms.  John was a bookbinder as well in Glasgow.
I am doing my research from afar (Australia) and am a newbie at Scotish research. I had never heard of a burgess before.  I did have a look for burgess admissions register online and did find the Glasgow and Edinburgh records but nothing for Neil or Niel.
The search goes on.

Lanarkshire / James Niel, Anderton help deciding possible parents
« on: Thursday 10 September 15 03:35 BST (UK)  »
I have another query with my Neil family.  I have decided to start a new post following on from the information I have received in my previous post
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=730182.0

I have the marriage from the Barony marriage register - 6 August 1820 - "James Niel Bookbinder Anderton and Sarah Lindsay residing there"  I thought I would try to go back another generation and look for James's baptism.  I know from his death registration in 25/4/1832, Edinburgh he died from cholera at age 33, so I thought I would look with the date range 1796 to 1802.  I have narrowed it to two possibilities - 1. James son of James Niel and Agnes Park 28/2/1802, Barony, Glasgow City, Lanark and 2. James son of James Neil and Agnes Fairservice 21/1/1799, Glasgow, Lanark.
I would appreciate some input as to the best candidates (and its only a guess, I know) would the location of Barony and spelling of surname (same as marriage & death register) but incorrect age be a better choice than the age being correct and location as just Glasgow.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: help with occupation
« on: Thursday 10 September 15 00:50 BST (UK)  »
Thank you, I was thinking Ander... ?? but couldn't place that with his occupation and not being familiar with the area  didn't realise it was a location.  I am guessing it is very close to Barony.   Would this be indicating a possible place of birth or just location at time of marriage.  I am still on the search for his baptism and parent's details.

I have a marriage entry - 1820 and I am having trouble with the occupation of James Neil.  I can read "Bookbinder" but not the word after.  Any help would be appreciated.

Lanarkshire / Re: help with parents Samuel Neil b abt 1827 Glasgow
« on: Monday 07 September 15 23:36 BST (UK)  »
Thanks again everyone for your help.  Wikipedia in known for its inaccurate information, so he may of not been born in Edinburgh and is the birth date correct.  That is why I was  hoping to find a church record for him to confirm  his parents and date of birth.  There also doesn't seem to be a record for his brothers as well.  His father died when he was about 7, so this may of had an influence on his life and he may of been in the "House of Refuge for Boys" at that time.  But it does seem that he got his life back on track as all the census I can find has his occupation as some form of Teacher/Lecturer.

Thanks everyone for your help.  I have been lucky enough today to find Samuel Neil in Wikipedia and then his death registration as suggested.  His parents were James Neil (Niel) and Sarah Lindsay.  But I have not been able to find Samuel's birth details in August 1825, Edinburgh, as mentioned in the Wikipedia article and the 1841 census still stumps me.  I have tried Scotchlands People, Ancestry, Family Search & Find My Past.   Can anyone else help with some suggestions, your help so far has been appreciated.
