Fife / Re: Can anyone help with Bonallie family Fife
« on: Saturday 15 October 11 16:59 BST (UK)  »
I have just come across this old post. I hope that you have by now found your answers, but just in case, I think when you say "I have got as far as Alexander Bonella (1846 ? probably Kirkcaldy) Farmer and Master Mealmiller.", you may have the wrong Alexander!
The Alexander Bonella that married Isabella McNab was the son of Robert Bonella and Isabella Porter.

From the information you gave, I think that the Alexander you want is Alexander Bonello, born 19/09/1820 in Dysart to William Bonallie and Elizabeth Martin. He was a Master Mariner and had a child (John Lower) by Elzabeth Lower Sunderland in 1838. They married (his name recorded as Bonallie) in Sunderland in 1844 and had a further 5 children between then and her death in 1876. Alexander married Isabella Chase in 1878, but died 2 years later in 1880.

The only Julie I can find on that part of my tree is the daughter of James Bonallie and Mavis Lyon and is descended from Andrew's son Robert. If that is you, I am pretty sure I am giving you the correct ancestry. If this is old news, I apologise, but if it is not and you want more then please let me know.

I am trying to identify the birth date and parents of a William Bonello who married a Margaret Russell in Dysart on 24/10/1778. I suspect that he was the brother of a George Bonello as a Margaret Russell married a George Bonello on 07/10/1769. George Bonello then died on 17/12/1777 and I suspect that Margaret re-married the brother William, though George and William may have just been cousins.

I cannot find any birth records for William or George. I have checked Scotland People, Ancestry and FamilySearch (IGI), but drawn a blank. I believe that William was a Brewer and was probably born in Dysart as he married there and had 4 children there with Margaret. I can find no death record for William, but Margaret outlived him by quite a few years and is shown as "relict" on her death in 1820. As she died aged 79, this would imply birth in 1741, so I assume that William would have been about the same age and born between 1740-1750.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Alan

Thanks for the information. It is very interesting and tallies with the earliest Bonally's I have found  being in the Dunfermline area. I have a Lowrie Bonalay marrying a Ellen Davidson 06/12/1562 in Dunfermline and having 4 children  between 1565 and 1575 all of whose births are recorded in/as Dunfermline. By his second wife, he had two more sons (Jhone and Thomas), however, by the mid 1600's they seem to have moved to East Fife as the majority of births and marriages are around Wemyss, Largo, Leven, and Ceres.

Where can I see the Gordon's map you referenced?

Thanks. That helped. I have Margaret as being born 16/10/1825 (registered as Bonally) in Carnbee and marrying James in 12/11/1856 in Perth. Both have their usual residence at time of marriage as Auchtermuchty and both show as being the same age at time of marriage, which would make James born circa 1825, but I cannot find a matching birth. The marriage certificate shows Margaret's  parents as being Robert Bonella and Isabella Hill and James parents as being James Colville and Mary ?Herd? (bit indistinct). If you want to give me an email address, I will send you copies of birth and marriage details for you to assess yourself.

If you are interested in the Bonella line, I also have Margaret's ancestry going back (albeit sparsely) through 9 generations to Robert Bonaly in 1530.

Nothing that jumps out. She is not currently on my tree, but I maybe have her in my notes. Can you give me anything else about her or her relatives?
Thanks

Yes, I found that, but her earliest Bonailo is also the John Bonailo who married Margaret Blyth 23/02/1728.
Thanks

Fife / Bonella, Bonello, Bonalay, Bonaillo and Bonailo

I started researching my Mothers family (Bonella's in Fife), and managed to get back to around 1750. About that time, I find variations in the name (e.g. Bonello, Bonalay, Bonaly and Bonailo), and this has allowed me to extend the tree back to 1530.  However, while I have a few Bonaillo's on my family tree, I have no Bonailo's (single l), but I do have a whole family of them on paper starting in Markinch, expanding into dysart and then heading south to England in around 1850. Trying to make the connection to their ancesters is driving me nuts - hence the post. I am sure that the two trees must connect, and I suspect it will be around the late 1600's.

My tree of Bonailo's goes back as far as around 1705 where I have three brothers and their partners, in or near Markinch:

William Bonailo, married Elspet Durie 29/12/1724.
John Bonailo,  married Margaret Blyth 23/02/1728.
James Bonailo, married Ann Philp 28/09/1728.

Does anyone have any information regarding their parents, or their date/place of birth?

Thanks

Alan
