Thanks jvy20,

Yes that is one I've been looking as a big contender - and you coming up with the same result reinforces my hunch - although I can't seem to find anything in the 1871 census - and in the 1881 census of wales my suspected thomas is a crew member of the 'spirt of dawn' in Holyhead.

Lancashire / William Ellison - Mariner ??
« on: Friday 21 May 10 15:25 BST (UK)  »
I'm struggling to locate a relative from the mid-ninetinth century.
I received a marriage certificate for the marriage of John Ellison b.1860(my gg grandfather) and his wife Catherine Jane Lennon which took place in 1881 in Liverpool.
But unfortunately like John Ellison his father William's Profession is listed as a Mariner so going back through the census's is hap-hazard as I am constantly wondering whether William is away at sea on the night of the census's ???

And with no mothers name - I am finding it hard to pin down my William...
Do any resources where crew-listings for merchant ships or the like exist where I could trace my ancestor?

Any ideas??

Caernarvonshire / Re: Robert Owen or Owens b.1863

Another thing that help reinforce my hunch is the fact Gyffin in the late 19th centrury was quite a small area between south of Conwy - and even today it is still of modest size - so the possiblty of a familys of owen and owens living together with so much in common with names of children, occupation and D.O.B's seem very unlikely.

p.s Thanks for all the info from the above replies.

Eureka!!! - Just found Robert Owen on the 1891 census living in Gyffin with - Lucy Owen aged 68 (his widowed mother) which fits in with the 1822 ish date of her birth - so somewhere between 1871 and 1891 Owens became Owen ???

Just run Robert Owen b.1862 +/- one year - in Wales(whole of)  with father Daniel - through ancestry.com search engine and -

Robert Owens born Gyffin, Carnarvonshire -  parents Daniel and Lucy Owens is the only result of the search -

Surely this must mean my relative ???
Sometimes this genealogy hobby really drives you up the wall ::)

Yes, I was working backwards from 1911 - Mary Catherine Jones is Robert Owen's wife.

Lucy Roberts (i think) is Daniel Owens wife.

Looks like another certificate then  :-\  - (ancestry.coms family tree's are down as well so I can't even cross check my info on them either)

Thanks,
Yes a joiner is a carpenter (as I myself am one), but the whole crux of the problem is whether the name Owen and Owens could have been mixed up when the census was taken - do you think that a possiblity back then??
