The Royal Marine Bernard Callaghan who died at Jutland on the Black Prince had a mum Emma 52 Broad Lane Sheffield(Widow) on the 11 census
Bernard had a sister who was born 1898 called Winnifred could this be maybe Winsome??
Bernard was born C 1892

Ady

That is the best lead we have to date Ady and my wife is so excited after so long so a big hug from her.. :) Can you suggest a site where we might be able maybe look at the rest of the family.. The date you have posted re Bernard's birth year would make him a young man at the time of his death and the 2 year difference between he and Winnifred sounds good also..

It's a shame that we have limited access to British records where we live here in Australia so we both appreciate your assistance.. Once again thanks mate..

Graham

Hi, and thank you all for your replies re: Bernard Callaghan..

Ady, you asked "is this the right family" and I am unable to answer that because the only thing we know is my father in laws name was Norman William Fields and his parents were John William Fields and WINSOME HOPE CALLAGHAN so I am pressuming that Bernard was possibly Winsome's brother or maybe uncle..

Norman was a strange man and for whatever reason he would not talk about his family.. Whenever my wife asked him about her roots all he would say was "what do you want to know that for"..

My wifes name is * and she was born in Sheffield on * and her mum was Delma (Richards) who was Australian.

Other than that she knows nothing at all about the Callaghan side of her family except for the Death Penny and her Gran's maiden name and that is making our search near impossible..

Hi. I have recently came into possession of a British Death Penny inscribed with the name BERNARD CALLAGHAN.. My wife and I found it amongst my now deceased father in laws belongings after he passed away and have no idea who BERNARD was but I imagine he was a family member.. My father in laws g/parents were originally from Ireland, one being prodestant and one catholic and we have always been led to believe they fled Ireland for obvious reason and settled in Sheffield or there abouts..

Can anyone suggest how I can find out who BERNARD may have been.. Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Sorry Mandy but the Ellen Mansfield you refer to is definitely not the wife of Ephraim Mansfield as she was only 12 years of age at the time of her passing and her parents were not George Mansfield and Maria Hurst..

Hello Judith.. Yes, I have seen the information that the link you posted shows but unfortunately I cannot access the data re Ephraim Mansfield because, as it says in that link, there are living relatives and I guess because of privacy laws the public cannot read it.

The information I am looking for is purely to find where Ephraim died and/or where he is buried or if he left the country because there just doesn't appear to be a record of what happened to him. He is a mystery to say the least.

Hello Leanne and thank you.. I have had the same thought and have tried as many variations of the name Asekeller as I could come up with but with no success.. I cannot find that surname in BDM, records, any telephone book in Australia so it remains a mystery to me.

I also have been led to believe that Ephraim and Ellen were married in 1899 at the Holy Trinity Church Erskinville and I have contacted the church but was told that they do not have records dating back to 1899..
