I think the John Willis Robinson who died in 1863 is not the same as John Robinson who died in 1870.  There is a sepearte death registration for him:

1863/730 Robinson John NR

I think there is a diconnect between the name on the tombstone and the name used in the records. It would seem that Isaiah is Richard in the BDM records.

The Symonds Street Cemetery Anglican Sexton's list has John and Isaiah Robinson at Block C 156 and C 157.

According to the late 1950's tombstone transcriptions John Willis Robinson died 24 May 1863 aged 83 years, Isaiah Robinson died 24 May 1881 aged 18 years.

The St Paul's register has John Robinson buried 9 November 1870 aged 50 years of Newton Road. This is the father of Isaiah/Richard.

The Death certificate index for 1881 has Richard Robinson instead of Isaiah  and the St Paul's register has Richard Robinson buried 25 May 1881 aged 16 years of Newton Road.

The Auckland Star newspaper, on 24 May 1881, had this article:

Death - Robinson - on the 24th instant, at Newton, Richard, youngest son of the late John Robinson, 16 years.  The funeral will take place tomorrow (Wednesday), 25th instant, at 2:30 pm. Friends accept this intimation.

Poss Birth Reg:  1865/6200 Robinson Richard
Death Registration: 1881/218 Robinson Richard 16Y
Death Reg: 1870/2096 Robinson John NR

So if this Richard is Isaiah, he was not born at sea.

Found a death of Isaiah Robinson in 20 May 1916, age 48.  This gives a birth year of about 1868. I did not find him in the NZ BDM for 1867-1869.  His occupation was tinsmith.  He was buried at Purewa Cemetery. His probate is at Archives NZ.

Death Reg: 1916/4042 Robinson Isaiah 48Y

Isaiah first appears on the electoral rolls in 1890, living on Pitt Street in Auckland.  Also on Pitt street are John Robinson Sr., tinsmith and John Robinson Jr., tinsmith.

Does this sound like your guy?

New Zealand Completed Requests / Lookups on from Maori BDM microfiche request
« on: Thursday 16 February 12 13:34 GMT (UK)  »
I do not live in New Zealand and would be very grateful if someone could lookup the following BDMs for me.  They are not at the historical BDM website so I suspect they are on the Maori rolls.  Thank you to whatever kind soul makes the trip to the library to do the lookups.

Marriages:

9 Sep 1913: Athole Stanley Wemyss and Erana Putiputi Heihi, aka Helen Hayes

Deaths:

1913: Mere Tarahau Waaka, (Reporoa) married to Pene Heihi (Ben Hayes).

8 Sep 1926, (Gisborne?), Helen Wemyss, aka Erana Putiputi Heihi/Hayes/Wemyss

1935, (Tokomaru Bay, Gisborne)  Harata Poiwa Temoko, married name Heihi/Hayes. Wife of Hone Heihi (John Hayes) who died before her.

9 Oct 1933, Reremoana HEIHI (Ellen Hayes) married to William Baker Milner.

These are births, but they occured before Maori birth registration became compulsory in 1913. Does anyone know where they might be recorded, if at all?

17 Dec 1881 (Gisborne) Erana Putiputi Heihi, aka Helen Hayes, father Hone Heihi (John Hayes)

Abt 1857 (near Gisborne) Hone Heihi, aka John Hayes, sone of Pene Heihi (Ben Hayes) and Mere Tarahau Waaka (?)

If you catch any other registration for the surname Heihi I'd be interested. The Heihi/Hayes family lived near Gisborne and Reporoa on the East Cape of New Zealand.
