If you contact me on my email (patk@sonic.net) I'll be happy to reply with some photos of the graves, &c., if that would be of interest to you.

Many thanks for the reply. So sad that it's proving almost impossible to trace relatives of my dad's aircrew. . . The situation in France is a little different. The little village near Strasbourg where the crew are buried have got together and recently built a memorial to them at the spot where the Lancaster came down, in a remote part of the nearby forest. Also, some benches overlooking a local lake have been set aside with plaques name the crew members. An inspiration.

Thanks, dawnsh. That might be a problem with Frederick Hankey Jr whose year of birth is reported variously as 1821 and 1822. But his father's marriage to his 'Greek Lady' can be narrowed down to late January 1819, thanks entirely to two of the references supplied by Shaunj for periodicals of the period -- "The Gentleman's Magazine" and "The Edinburgh Annual Register" -- which note the marriage, although the dating of the event is not too clear. I need, I think, to check these periodicals more closely. They include marriages and deaths of 'notables' and so may reasonably list births too.

Hello: I'm trying to find an exact birth date for Frederick Hankey who was born on Corfu about 1822, the son of Sir Frederick Hankey, secretary to Sir Thomas Maitland, the Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands during the British Protectorate. Another problem is the identity of Sir Frederick's wife at the time of Hankey Jr's birth. Sir Frederick's English wife, Charlotte Hankey (she was his first cousin) died in 1816; he subsequently remarried (c. 1818 one surmises) someone identified only as as a "Greek lady" in all references I've been able to unearth. If anyone can help me with these problems, I'd be bery grateful.

I'm sure you have looked but I can find no Archibald listed in "Footprints"  or in the "RAF Commands" forum listing of POW's.

http://www.rafcommands.com/Air%20Force%20PoWs/RAF%20POWs%20Index.html

Jimmy Archibald was dad's pilot. Jimmy was the only survivor. He landed in a tree and sustained (depending on which account is correct) a broken leg or pelvis. The Germans took him to a local hospital for initial treatment, and then shipped him to Paris where he was shortly afterwards liberated and returned to the UK. My mother had confirmation of my dad's death from Jimmy before she got it from the RAF. Jimmy returned to New Zealand after the war. I am in regular contact with his son David, who is presently (May 2011) en route to visit the graves of his father's crew in France. I made the same trip last year, and was presented with a small piece of my dad's 'plane which had been saved by the local villagers. They are wonderful people. They keep fresh flowers on the graves to this day, and have erected at their own expense a memorial in the forest where the 'plane crashed.

Norfolk / John Rowland Cuthbert of High Kelling

Hi:

Not sure if this is the right venue for a question of this sort, but here goes. . .  My dad, John Edward Kearney, was killed in July 1944 with the rest of his aircrew (save the pilot who survived) over N. France. One of his fellow crew members was John Rowland Cuthbert or High Kelling, Norfolk, the son of John and Annie Cuthbert. I would very much like to get in touch with John Cuthbert's family, if any survive, to hopefully share letters and photos.

Hi I'm after any information on 576 Squadron Lancaster Bomber Serial Number    PB253 - Crashed 29th July 1944. that anyone may have, I am the Nephew of Alex Milne - Rear Gunner on the Lancaster.

Thanks

I can help. My dad was your uncle's navigator, and was killed in the same crash. I have some letters which may be of interest, and last year went to the graves of the crew. Feel free to get in touch.

I work in Longford, it's about a mile or so from Sipson and borders the northern runway of Heathrow Airport. I don't recognise that frontage although there are still some old houses and pubs standing.

Staines, Sipson and Longford must be fairly close to each other then, which makes sense so far as the Starnes family is concerned. Or, at least, my branch of it. It's difficult to date the photograph, but c. 1900 would be close since Percy Starnes appears to have emmigrated to the US in 1907, and made several trips back and forth in the preceding years. It would be nice to know the address of the Longford Post Office in 1900. O for a set of Post Office directories!
