Thank you for that, a particularly good photo.  Hopefully there are old photos around to dig up too.

Dorset / Bridport hospital at Bedford Place?
« on: Monday 17 October 22 19:45 BST (UK)  »
Hello

My father was born at 1 Bedford Place, Bridport in 1942.  Some of my searches seem to suggest this was the former workhouse.  Does anyone have any information on this site, was it a local infirmary during the war or more specialist (mother and baby home)?   Any photos about? My Grandmother and the family were from Southampton and moved back there not long afterwards.

Thanks
Liz

If they are in a library and not digitised then they will only be searchable by address.

Thanks, so unless I've got a possible address this would be pretty impossible...

Yes Ethel was born Ethel Susan Baskwill in 1882 in Totnes, Devon.  Although she never legally married, she died as Ethel Susan Head in Richmond, Surrey in 1967.

I started to dig into this niece who lived in Detroit and I think she's actually a member of Ethel's extended family, she was born Irene Farley and married another Devonian, Frederick Scadding in the USA.  Wondering whether Mark was going to go out to the USA and get a job, then Ethel was going to follow him.  But that never happened and they ended up living in Totnes by 1939.

Thanks for the posts.

Yes I recently saw the record listing Margaret as his widow, maybe she claimed his pension!?  He definitely didn't die until 1953.  But he's listed as living with someone else entirely in the 1920s, so assume they separated.

You can see why I get fascinated by Mark and Ethel  ;D

Thanks for your reply, yes I have them living in Totnes in 1939 from the register and they moved to Richmond upon Thames by the late 40s.  It's just this odd time in the 30s where I'm not sure where they are.

Devon Lookup Requests / Staverton and Totnes Electoral register query 1930s

Hello

Just on the off chance that Electoral Registers are available somewhere in a library for Staverton/Dartington/Totnes areas in the 1930s (1931-1938)?  I've found my great grandmother Ethel Susan Head in Staverton Bridge (online) in 1930 with her partner Mark Liberty Head.  I don't know whether they stay in Devon during the 30s - is there anywhere these registers are available and is there anyone who could help to see if they are around?

Thanks
Liz

She is certainly elusive in the 1911 Census. I have looked on various sites using all kinds of different options and there is certainly no sign of her.

I guess she was less than two months old, and as she wasn't living with her family she could have been missed or on a list as 'baby' or 'nurse child'.  I'm hoping she won't be as elusive for the 1921 census...
