Kilkenny / Downey - Kilkenny and Conahy
« on: Thursday 04 July 24 04:16 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Hoping to gather people interested and connected to the Downeys from Kilkenny and Conahy?

Mine started in Ballyragget and went to Canada where we are still.

I am trying to find the generation of these Downey's from 1750-1800. My ancestor was Patrick Downey born 1784 Ballyragget. We are high linked with DNA testing to a descendant of Nicholas Downey of Upper Conahy born 1792. As well as John Downey born 1839 in Rathkyle.

Found it!!!  Seems my dates are off somehow in the translation.  Their listing is in between the dark black lines with they typed 1810 on the right.

Hi BobJoe!!

How do you fit into the clan!?  I'd love to know as I am trying to update all the branches :D

On James's immigration record he lists Ballyragget as his place of birth.  As well as his marriage record I believe.  I'll have to double check that.  But I do have a piece of paper that's him and says he's born in Ballyragget.

The original document I started this obession with was from my Uncle Cyril Downey.

Hi!

Okay so I am curious if I can fit my Downey line in!

I descend from a Patrick Downey born 1784 in Ballyragget, Kilkenny Ireland.  Patrick left Ireland in 1806 and settled in Newfoundland, Canada.  I have all his descendents from there...but we've never been able to determine who his parents were.  Patrick married an Anastasia O'Hearn (from County Kerry) in 1810 in St. John's Roman Catholic Basilica.

I saw the post about John Downey from Ballyragget and him being born in 1780 and wondered if John and Patrick could be brothers?  Patrick and Anastasia had 9 children:  Bridget, James, Catherine, Anne, Mary, Elizabeth, Anastasia, Michael and Thomas.  Our family hypothesizes that Patrick's dad's name was James (only because of the strong naming tradition in Irish families...which becomes more evident in further generations)....but that could be off base too.

Anyways, just some theories but would love to touch base with others researching the Ballyragget Downeys.

Sarah
