Shropshire / Re: PUGH: Bishops Castle 1720-1760
« on: Thursday 05 March 26 12:09 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you for the feedback, since my post (4 years ago) I have been working with The Shropshire Family History Society who have helped to confirm much and help me make amendments to my original post which may be useful to others looking at Pugh's in Bishops Castle.

I have attached both a visual and text file listing all church record data associated to 4 generations of my Pugh family up to and including my ancestor who departed Shropshire and ending up in South Yorkshire.

Gen 1: Humphrey Pugh (b. abt.1744 - d.1808, bur.07 Jan 1808)
Gen 2: Walter Pugh (b. 1767, c.25 Feb 1767 - d.1850, bur.14 Jan 1850)
Gen 3: Humphrey Pugh (b. 1803, c.08 Apr 1803 - d.1850, bur.14 Jan 1850)
 > Walter Pugh (b.1767) had 2 sons he named Humphrey, another baptised 10 Mar 1798 died in infancy and was burried on 14 Mar 1798
Gen 4: Walter Pugh (b. 1835, c.10 May 1835 - d.31 Dec 1909, bur.04 Jan 1910 in Sheffield)

I am still looking for the elusive ancestor that was born in Wales - If anyone can shed light on either the parentage of, or more information on Humphrey Pugh who (based upon documents I have) was born about 1744 (but exactly when or where I don't know) he was married to Elizabeth Pugh (nee Pugh) on 1 June 1764 at St John the Baptist Church, Bishop's Castle where he was also buried on 14 Jan 1850.

Shropshire / PUGH: Bishops Castle 1720-1760
« on: Wednesday 27 February 19 13:32 GMT (UK)  »
I hope someone may be able to help. I'm seeking information on the Pugh family of Bishop's Castle around the years 1720-1760.

I am a Pugh who lives in South Yorkshire and 10 Years ago my father (now 85) said to me “you know, we have a Welsh name, I was born and bread in Sheffield like your grandfather and I have no knowledge of anyone in my family every being Welsh”.  So this has been my quest for a number of years now to find the first member of my family to come from Wales before my dad leaves us.

So far I have traced my dads ancestry from Sheffield, South Yorkshire to Bishop Castle with (I believe) confirmed ancestry up to Walter Pugh (b 25 Feb 1767, Bishops Castle / d Mar 1850, Montgomeryshire) who on 09 May 1789 at St John the Baptist Church, Bishop's Castle married Mary Higgins (b 19 Feb 1766, Bishops Castle).   I have managed to trace family to Bishops Castle but I have not managed to get that last mile or so over the border into Wales.

I believe maybe Walter’s father may be the missing link, I think he is Humphrey Pugh who married Elizabeth who’s maiden name may also have been Pugh at St John the Baptist Church, Bishop's Castle on 01/06/1764.  If anyone can help or point me in the right direction it would be appreciated.  Ideally I would like to identify Humphrey's date and place of birth and if possible his parents if he was not born in Wales.

THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP!

If it helps, this is what I have...

Shropshire / Re: PUGH. Bishop's Castle & area, early census
« on: Monday 01 June 09 23:27 BST (UK)  »
I hope someone may be able to help. I'm seeking information on the Pugh family of Bishop's Castle (possibly with other districts local to BC)....

Hi,

I am a Pugh who has so far traced my ancestry from Sheffield, South Yorkshire to Clun / Bishop Castle and can confirm a Walter Pugh (b 1767) who Married Mary Hiccins on 09 May 1789 and the Marriage is registered in Bishop Castle, Shropshire.

I believe his father is called Humphrey with mother Elizabeth (Married 01/06/1764 - also Bishop Castle) and has a brother Humphrey (b 1769) I am currently looking into this link and would like to go further but I have no more information at the moment.

I don't know if there is any link helping you between Walter and Humphrey's line or if this is what you are looking for, but I'm sure they will be related one way or another.

If it helps, this is what I have...

To be confirmed
Humphrey Pugh - Elizabeth (Married 01/06/1764 Bishop Castle)
Children: Walter (b 1767 Bishop Castle) [/color]& Humphrey (b 1769 Bishop Castle)

Walter Pugh (b 1767) - Mary Hiccins (Married 09/05/1789 Bishop Castle)
Children: Walter (b 1798 Bishop Castle) & Humphrey (b 1803 Bishop Castle)

Humphrey Pugh (b 1803) - Anne Jones (Married 28/09/1826 Bishop Castle)
Children: Walter (b 1836 Bishop Castle)

It appears Walter (b 1836) left Bishop Castle and became a steel foundry man who travelled to find work; married, started a family in Birmingham moving to Leeds, Nr Chesterfield, Barnsley and eventually settling in Sheffield.

Children:

Obviously if anyone can help with the Humphry/Walter line in Bishop Castle or Clun, it would be greatly appreciated.
