Oh that is awful. I feel really quite upset by this and surprised that no one in the family over here ever mentioned it. Nelly corresponded with the family in the UK so it seems strange that it was never discussed or passed down to later generations.  That must have been devestating for them all. I also find it perculiar that in the obituarys only the sisters are mentioned and not the 2 brothers Frederick and John. I have now found Johns war records too. He was very young in the first war and suffered a heart condition after it due to being subjected to many gas attacks.  It strikes me that the family suffered a lot of heartbreak.  I wish I could fathom out why when returning to war John stated he is gong to Ohio to visit his sister Annie, who it appears was always with Robert Jack?  Expecially as he gives the correct surname of the family at the correct address .... hmmmm all very interesting.

Im also fascinated at how you are tracking these stories down! Its heartbreaking to read but very insightful into the families lives in canada.

thanks so much

Hi,

There is a marriage in Montreal 18 Feb. 1914 at Ste. Stephens Anglican Church

John Albert Woodward, tool setter, bachelor of Montreal, son of William Henry Woodward and Clara
Caddock and Nellie Russell, spinster daughter of Frederick Isaac Russell and Harriet Evans. She
signs as Nellie Russell. Witnesses Ethel Maud Ward, John Henry Tupper and Fred Russell.

There is a Canadian Passenger list in June 1921 on the ship Metagama,
Woodward, John Albert, age 34
Woodward, Nellie, age 28
Woodward, Nellie, age 5
Woodward, Lillian Patricia, age 2
Woodward, Leslie, age 8 wks.]

With the 1921 passenger there is the Form 30A, each passenger has a sheet. On both
John Albert's and Nellie's sheets, they list F. Russell as father/father in law, 913 Albert St.
Montreal. The 30A Form is viewable through Ancestry and Library and Archives Canada.
For the moment Library and Archives Canada website is down.

thankyou for looking!  I do have this information, Nellie was Annies sister so you have the correct family

Not sure if you have ancestry but this is a link to her brother Johns border pass https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/1075/images/M1480_117-4535?pId=4895421

I just signed up with this and am not sure about all the people mentioned, but my great grandmother was named Amelia Harriet Spicer. She was born in Canada but her parents came from England.  Her older brother was born on the ship while they were crossing over.  She married my great grandfather, Frederick Randolph Mallaire in Canada and then they moved to Ohio.

So sorry I have only just seen this.   Please can you contact me!!! Ive tried to message you but your inbox is full. I wondered if it was possible if Frederick Randoph maybe had a brother and they all lived in Grant street until Annie and husband moved away or maybe Annie married him first and then dies and he remarries? The surname is unusual too and there isnt a lot to go on either?? Its strange how my cousin John went to visit his sister at that address but she isnt listed on the census?? I

I hope that you can provide me with some insight into this

Dawn!!!!

This quest is still ongoing. If anyone can shed any light I would greatly appreciate it.
In brief
Annie Russell is born Bilston England to Fred and Harriet Russell. They emmigrate to Canada on the Corsican in September 1911
I cant find Annie Russell again other than her Brother John on 20th Sep 1920 states on a US Border document that he is going to visit his sister Annie Mollaire or Mallaire? at 1314 Grant Avenue kenmore Ohio.  (I know he is definitely the right John because the address he gives in Montreal is the correct address for his father Fred.)

The difficult thing is that there are Millaires living at that address on the American census.

The woman is named Amelia, on other documents her parents surnames are Spicer and Webb, she was born in Canada her parents were English?

I am assuming that possibly Annie has died? or left (possibly with John?) and cant trace them again???  Unless Amelia is Annie and has completely changed her name and for some reason lied about her family and origins this makes no sense .... What became of Annie?????  Any advice appreciated!!!!

quote author=dawnyj link=topic=613098.msg4621155#msg4621155 date=1346270203]
I am researching a branch of my family that emmigrated to Canada.  The family originated in Bilston  Staffordshire.

Some of the family moved on from Montreal and went to Toronto some went to Hamilton.

Here comes my strange puzzle....

One of the children John Russell goes to visit his sister Mrs Annie Mallaire(nee Russell) in November 1920 at 1314 Grant Avenue, Kenmore Akron Ohio.  The street directories have a Fred Mallaire there with his wife Amelia.  Amelia was born around about the same time as Annie. I was convinced that Amelia was really Annie as She lists both her parents as being in English.  However a number of years later Amelia remarries and names her mother as Harriet Webb,
My Annies Mum was called Harriet but her surname was not Webb, it was Evans.

I cannot find any records for a marriage of Annie Russell to a Mr Mallaire, Birth Records in Bilston for her as Annie or anything pertaining to her after her name appears on the passenger listing when she arrives in Montreal as Annie Russell, or her brother Freds marriage where she is a witness in 1917 then finally the border crossing of her brother John who visits her and names her as his sister Mrs Annie Mallaire of 1314 Grant Ave.

Stuck isnt the word. What became of Annie Mallaire ??

Good find, Jo!

Likely baptism Pelsall 2 Oct 1803 Harratt daughter of Thomas & Hannah Poxson
same day as William son of Joseph & Ann Russell who could be related to John?

Marriage Walsall 13 Feb 1802 Thomas Poxon & Hannah Jobber

Burial Stonnall in Shenstone 15 Dec 1844 Hannah Poxton 62 Ogley, late of Catshill

I have discovered that Joseph Russell was a witness at the Wedding of Thomas and Hannah. I am now trying to work out their connection. I do now think that I have the right people. I cant find any other nailor in Shelfield with the name John, I still cant find a birth for Thomas but it makes sense that if Harriet married John and her maiden name was Poxon then its likely their son that is staying with Grandparents.

Elizabeth's maiden name may have been HENDY (provided John Jr's age is slightly out in 1851...) but as yet I haven't found any possible marriage.

Per GRO
[Other census children born too early]
Mary Ann RUSSELL - 1839 - Dudley RD - mmn HENDY
John RUSSELL- 1 qr 1844 - Dudley RD - mmn HANDEY

Other RUSSELL / HENDY children in Dudley
William RUSSELL - 1840 - Dudley RD - mmn HENDY - possible death 1840 aged 0
Elizabeth RUSSELL - 1841 - Dudley RD - mmn HENDY - possible death 1842 aged 0 among others
Ann RUSSELL - 1842 - Dudley RD - mmn HENDY - possible death 1841 aged 0
William RUSSELL - 1847 - Dudley RD - mmn HENDY - no idea about this one

did you find a birth for Thomas??  That all looks interesting, especially as the parents originate from Pelsall. When I looked for this family I couldnt find the parents on a census after 1851, I may look to see if they emigrated to Canada as some of Thomas' children did later on.  It may be that Thomas was left behind as he was married?? All guesswork but possible?  I  will try again and do some digging when I finish work later. many thanks for your help.

There is an 1825 baptism in Bilston of a Thomas Russell to Robert & Rachael Russell.

Maybe a possibility if you have no documentary evidence of his father being John.

Pheno

thankyou for looking. I do have evidence of John.  Thomas states his father as being called John and a nailer at his wedding to francis
